Frank D. Whitney was sworn in as United States Attorney for the Eastern
District of North Carolina on April 22, 2002. In 1982, Mr. Whitney graduated
Phi Beta Kappa from Wake Forest University and was commissioned as a Wake
Forest ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate into the United States Army
Reserve Military Intelligence Corps. He served on active duty as an
Intelligence Officer until leaving to attend law and business schools at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1987, Mr. Whitney graduated
with honors from law school and received his MBA. He then clerked for the
Honorable David B. Sentelle, Circuit Judge for the United States Court of
Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and entered private practice
with the Washington, D. C., office of the firm of McKenna, Connor and Cuneo.
In April of 1990, he joined the United States Attorney's Office for the
Western District of North Carolina as an Assistant U. S. Attorney, where he
served in numerous positions in the Criminal and Civil Divisions until April
2001. He then joined the firm of Kilpatrick & Stockton, LLP, as counsel in
the firm's Charlotte office, where he practiced until his appointment as
United States Attorney. Mr. Whitney has continued his military service in
the Army Reserve both as an Intelligence Officer and as a Judge Advocate. He
is a former paratrooper, received three Meritorious Service Medals, and
recently was selected for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel.
