#2. Area 51 Internat Café opens its doors
(by Christine Haugseth, Assistant News Editor)

An alien invasion targeted a brand new, state of the art Internet
Café called AREA 51 which was celebrating its opening.

It is no coincidence that these extraterrestrial creatures selected
the newly opened café as their invasion spot. In fact, AREA 51 was
named after a top secret military research center, operated by US
Air Force established in Nevada, USA that is primarily involved with
extra terrestrial life. The AREA 51 Cyber Café has been designed as
the inside of a UFO. The decoration is strikingly alien, with alien
faces on the doors and walls, alien posters and high-tech design
elements, which capture the attention and interest of visitors.

The concept for AREA 51 sprang from the need for modern, futuristic
venues places for the youth in Abu Dhabi. Launching AREA 51
originated from the need to fill this gap, and provide Abu Dhabi
teenagers with a fun destination that suits their taste. Mr. Basar,
the General Manager of PAL group, the company that established AREA
51, holds very high prospects for the new Cyber Café. Moreover, the
Multiply Marketing Consultancy team worked on the opening, and has
designed an ambitious marketing strategy for the outlet for the
coming year.

The initial sight of the aliens came as a surprise to the guests
present at AREA 51 and their bizarre behavior left the audience in
awe: the aliens attempted to take control of the cyber café, at
which point the infamous Men In Black came valiantly to the rescue
as they stormed into the café and neutralized the threat posed by
the aliens. In celebration of their success, the Men In Black formed
a group outside the venue and performed the Men In Black dance.

AREA 51 Internet Café is located in Khalidiya, Corniche Towers. In
addition to enjoying the distinctively extraterrestrial ambiance,
patrons will benefit from great internet services, network games,
billiards, Playstation games and a private alien section for ladies.

#3. The Mare Solved the Mystery
         (By Frank Edwards)

Three-year-old Ronnie Weitcamp left his three small playmates in the
front yard and ran around the house. It was a few minutes before
noon on October 11th, 1955. Two hours later Ronnie was the object of
one of the most intensive searches central Indiana ever saw, a
search that led into many states and, finally, to a horse that had
the answer.

When little Ronnie failed to come in for lunch on that fateful day,
his mother inquired of his three small playmates, who told
her, 'Ronnie went into the woods and he wouldn't come out!' Frantic,
the mother spread the alarm, for the 'woods' to which the children
referred constituted thousands of acres of scrub timber that spread
over the hilly south-central Indiana landscape around the Crane
Navel Depot where Ronnie's father worked. If Ronnie was lost in
there, finding him quickly was imperitive.

Sheriff's deputies and Indiana States Police lined up shoulder to
shoulder with an estimated fifteen hundred employees of the Naval
Depot. Ronnie had been missing for only a couple of hours when the
first search parties were formed; by late afternoon, when the
October chill began to settle over the scene, long lines of men were
scanning the bushes and ravines for some trace of the youngster.
They were working against time, for without shelter it was highly
improbable that Ronnie could live through the night.

#4. Is NASA Awash with "UFOs"?
         (By Larry W. Bryant)

Time was when the term "UFO" (meaning unidentified flying object)
was incompatible with the public image sought by America's National
Aeronautics and Space Administration. No NASA leader wanted to dirty
his hands by admitting to the public - especially information-hungry
Ufologists - that anyone in his organization had a keen interest in
pursuing UFO research.

But consider my recent serendipitous insight into that bureaucratic
mentality; it derives from my perusal of the contents of a snail-
mail envelope sent to me by the NASA FOIA office. The contents -
some 36 pages of abstracted catalog entries produced via "a search
of the NASA Aeronautics and Space Database for 'UFO or UFOs or
Unidentified flying object or unidentified flying objects or mufon
or Walter H. Andrus'" -- consists of two lists: "one of Limited
[meaning limited- distribution] documents, the other of Unlimited
documents." The unlimited ones "can be purchased from one of the
following sources:..."

#5. The Doctor's Buggy
         (by: James L.Choron)

Doctor Viktor Ivanov and Doctor Leonied Koronovski were fighting a
losing battle, and knew it. 1905 had been a bad year for Russia.
War, Revolution, Famine and Plague. all had come within the span of
a single year. In the wake of the Tsar's disasterous War with Japan
and the equally ill-fated uprising against the Tsar and his
hated "Okrana" or Political Police, the twin scourges of Cholera and
Typhus swept Russia from the Baltic to the Pacific. It was as if
God, in Heaven were punishing the already long-suffering peoples of
the East.

Russia, as always, was short of doctors, clinics and hospitals. Even
if there had been enough, the average Russian, whether living in his
or her tiny village, or in one of the great cities, was
superstitious and ignorant. Every house and hovel had a trove of
home-remedies, and a panthenon of tales concerning how to use them.
They might call a priest, but they would seldom call a doctor,
unless things were absolutely beyond all hope. Of course, in 1905,
there was little that a doctor could do, in any case. What medicines
as existed for Cholera were primitive and ineffective unless
administered extremely early in the course of the disease. With
Typhus, you either recovered or you didn't. It was that simple.

#6. The Bricks of Life: Exploring the Idea of Alien Chemistry
         (By Seth Shostak)

It's a question as common as brown dogs: will alien life be carbon-
based?

I'm asked this frequently, although I'm not sure why the public is
so hung up on the elemental basis of extraterrestrial life. In my
experience, folks seldom inquire whether the Krebs cycle could be
prevalent on other worlds, or if adenosine triphosphate might
underpin the energy production of active aliens. Probably the
fascination with vital soot is just a consequence of carbon's high
profile on Star Trek. The plot of this popular TV series gets
viscous whenever the Enterprise detects "carbon-based life forms" on
some God-forsaken planet deep in the Galaxy's nether regions. If
they're carbon-based, well, they must be like us (and possibly
edible, too).

Hype aside, as most astrobiologists or any one of a thousand books
will tell you, carbon-based life is not simply a provincial conceit.
There's good reason why this element is the basis for life on Earth,
and probably on most other worlds that shelter biology.

#7. A Palace Fit For The Stars
         (by Peter Elson, Daily Post)

It could have been Merseyside's greatest hotel, but was dogged by
failure and tragedy to the end. Peter Elson reports.

The early afternoon heat-haze shimmered over the tarmac of the wide,
gently curving crescent. Nothing stirred. The bungalows and dormers
of the three bedroom des-res variety with all mod cons slumbered
under Southport's cloudless sky.

It is the sort of balmy weather that English resorts fantasise
about - and sought to exploit in bygone times perhaps more than now.

Such a desire led to the creation of one of the most magnificent
hotels in the north of England, the Birkdale Palace Hotel. This
great Frenchified-style pile once proudly towered on the seafront
site now occupied by these anonymously small houses. The comparison
speaks for itself.

As Merseyside undergoes a boom in hotel building, but still finds
itself short of beds for the Grand National Festival weekend, such a
deluxe property would have been a boon. It was the preferred
roosting place of "A" list stars visiting the North West, such as
Frank Sinatra, Clark Gable and Peter Sellers. Norman Wisdom and
Boris Karloff filmed there.

#8. Spacecraft To Measure Earth's Drag On Space-Time
A spacecraft set to test Einstein's General Theory of Relativity is
now on the launch pad, with the world's most accurate gyroscopes
stowed away inside.

NASA has a launch window of just one second early on 19 April to
launch Gravity Probe B into a polar orbit precisely aligned with a
reference star. Any delay will mean waiting another day.

The gyros, a million times more accurate than the best on Earth,
will measure how the rotating Earth drags on the fabric of space-
time. "I expect this experiment is going to be in all the science
books," says Anne Kinney, director of NASA's astronomy/physics
division.

The mission is already has one record, as the space mission that has
taken the longest to get off the ground - NASA first funded it in
March 1964.

#9. Take Me To Your Fruit Stall
(By Peter Harrison, South London Press)

ALIENS could be charging their UFO batteries at a pylon or even
shopping for fruit and veg near you, say extraterrestrial experts.

In a list of the top 40 sites for UFO sightings in the UK, Lewisham
came tenth - 30 places ahead of Streatham.

The list was created by Nick Pope who ran the Ministry Of Defence's
(MOD) UFO desk from 1991 to 1994.

Roy Lake, spokesman for the organisation London UFO Studies, said
South-east London was an alien hotspot.

He said: "There are a lot of tall buildings, water and pylons in
these areas - maybe they [aliens] are curious about these things or
are recharging their batteries. They might even be living in the
community, trying to find out how we live and what we eat.

"There are quite a few sightings around these places, but the MOD
say they are nothing - I believe they are covering something up."

He said he believed more people would report sightings, but were too
embarrassed to make the call, fearing they would be ridiculed.

But while cynics have said they would be delighted to be abducted
from Catford and Lewisham, Mayor Steve Bullock has seized the
opportunity to claim the hive of outer space activity as a victory
for the borough.

He said: "I am delighted experts have concluded Lewisham is the 10th
most likely place to be abducted by aliens and one of the leading
London boroughs of choice for UFOs.

"I look forward to the problems of under reporting being resolved
and to creeping up the rankings."

However, Government officers deny a cover up, claiming a logical
explanation for the regular sightings.

An MOD spokeswoman said: "It's a flight path for planes. We do take
calls from people reporting unexplained aerial sightings. But there
is certainly no conspiracy. We have published all reports of
supposed UFOs under the code of practice on access to government
information."

#10. Aliens' Top Holiday Spots... in Beer Firm Survey
(By Jude Sheerin, Scottish Press Association)

A small Scottish town was today named UFO capital of the UK in a
survey.

Bonnybridge in Stirlingshire topped a league of 40 "alien encounter"
sites in the research.

Cley Hill in Wiltshire was the second most "extra-terrestrial-
plagued" area of Britain. Third came the Great Orme, the North Wales
beauty spot.

Researchers found that aliens seemed to be equally fond of the city,
with two areas of London - Walthamstow and Lewisham - making the top
10.

Bedhampton in Hampshire also made it on to the list because of
several "sightings" filmed by a local man which have never been
explained.

The survey by Grolsch beer found that as well as UFO-spotters,
firefighters and police had reported seeing strange objects in the
sky.

The depute provost of Falkirk Council, Billy Buchanan, 55, whose
constituency covers Bonnybridge, said he thought the town might be a
porthole to another dimension.

"We have two major alien abduction cases here at the moment and my
wife and I saw a strange triangular craft the size of a battleship
hovering above our house last week for three nights," he said.

There have been more than 60,000 sightings of flying saucers in the
town (population 5,500), which has been dubbed `Costa Del Sol' for
little green men.

#11. Ghost in the machine . . .
         (by Oliver Evans)

A "MOBILE monster" has been snapped by a Kidderminster couple who
used a "spell-ular" phone to snap this skull-like visage at a
haunted Black Country hotel.

Passionate paranormalists, Anthony Cartridge and Trudie Clark, spent
an evening at a notorious spook house.

But they found they could only witness the ghostly goings-on through
a state-of the-art "terrorphone".

#12. UFO Sightings May Prompt Investigation
(By Anita Munson, Tribune Staff Writer)

ROCHESTER -- Reports of a UFO in rural Rochester last week are
intriguing enough that an investigation could be launched by the
Mutual UFO Network. Roger Sudgen, MUFON assistant director for the
northern part of Indiana, said Monday he'll be calling several
residents who saw a disc-shaped object in the sky last Thursday
night around 10 p.m.

Bev Carpenter, who lives on County Road 450 North, in rural
Rochester, said she and her 13-year-old granddaughter, Shannay
Carpenter of Valparaiso, Ind., had just pulled into the driveway of
her home that night when the experience began.

"I'm a line-dance instructor," Carpenter began, "and I'd just picked
up my granddaughter, we'd gone out to supper, and I'd taught the
class, so we were pulling into the drive around 10 p.m., the normal
time.

"Shannay said, 'Grandma, what's that?' I'd been getting my stuff
out, and I turned around, and said, 'Oh, my God! That's a UFO.'"

#13. Paranoid Shift
(By Michael Hasty Online Journal Contributing Writer)

Just before his death, James Jesus Angleton, the legendary chief of
counterintelligence at the Central Intelligence Agency, was a bitter
man. He felt betrayed by the people he had worked for all his life.
In the end, he had come to realize that they were never really
interested in American ideals of "freedom" and "democracy." They
really only wanted "absolute power."

Angleton told author Joseph Trento that the reason he had gotten the
counterintelligence job in the first place was by agreeing not to
submit "sixty of Allen Dulles' closest friends" to a polygraph test
concerning their business deals with the Nazis. In his end-of-life
despair, Angleton assumed that he would see all his old companions
again "in hell."

The transformation of James Jesus Angleton from an enthusiastic, Ivy
League cold warrior, to a bitter old man, is an extreme example of a
phenomenon I call a "paranoid shift." I recognize the phenomenon,
because something similar happened to me.

Although I don't remember ever meeting James Jesus Angleton, I
worked at the CIA myself as a low-level clerk as a teenager in
the '60s. This was at the same time I was beginning to question the
government's actions in Vietnam. In fact, my personal "paranoid
shift" probably began with the disillusionment I felt when I
realized that the story of American foreign policy was, at the very
least, more complicated and darker than I had hitherto been led to
believe.

But for most of the next 30 years, even though I was a radical, I
nevertheless held faith in the basic integrity of a system where
power ultimately resided in the people, and whereby if enough people
got together and voted, real and fundamental change could happen.

#14. Weird Wisconsin
         (by: Richard D. Hendricks)

The Victorians, who went gaga for science, self-righteously altered
centuries of disturbing encounters with fairies, wee beings and The
Other Crowd, and rehabbed them for children as bright messengers of
hope bearing aloft good boys and girls to Neverland. Disney,
Tinkerbell, winged toddlers flitting in school pageants, cuteness
enough to make your teeth ache. But these dark, often malign
creatures have long lived beside us, and won't go away simply
because we've modified our views.

Jared, an infectiously enthusiastic twenty-something clad in black
leather with metal studs, lanky, goateed with long blond hair pulled
back in a pony tail, relayed an experience at his Rib Mountain home.

July 2000. He and his girlfriend were watching the Travel Channel
around six p.m. abundant sunlight. Jared needed a smoke. Went out to
the back deck, lit up. Movement at the tree line caught his eye.

#15. Haunted History
         (By CBS 11's Joel Thomas)

The Jett Building is a Fort Worth landmark. It once served as home
to an intercity train service to Dallas. Its now home to The Ranch
radio station. But, it's possible some of its old tenants never
departed.

"This is our happy little basement," says Gabriel Arreguin, a radio
station worker, as he plods down the winding wooden staircase.

The basement is dark. Its odd shape is framed in ominous, dark
crannies. Every sound echoes, hiding the noise's origin. It's a
large room, but with pillars and half walls and jutting supports you
feel somewhat claustrophobic.

Workers sprucing up the building complained of shadowy figures
lurking here. Tools would mysteriously disappear and reappear. None
of the construction crew would work in the basement alone.

"Lots of uneasiness," says Arreguin as he ventures into the dark
basement. "Lots of shadows. Lots of dark."
