The dry valleys in Antarctica are the closest match for Mars on earth.  NASA
tested the Viking probes there.

I live in Flagstaff and spend a lot of time traveling around in remote
deserts in Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado.  Every
single place I've ever been has loads of plants and lichens. You don't
see any plants in the Mars photos do you?  You might be able to find
plant-free zones in some dune lands or dry lake beds, but then the
Mars photos don't look like dry lake beds or dunescapes do they?
