What If a million americans would gather around area 51 and decide to walk

The enormous runway and large Hanger-type buildings are very
impressive. But the few pictures we have show little activity around
them. Pretty obvious that whatever is there is mostly underground.
A Vegas reporter snuck through the place and snooped around. He
really didn't see very much activity at all - despite a strong
Security Presense. So what are they guarding ? If you could sneak
around Andrews or Edwards they would look like small cities.
(Which they kinda are).
But,...A UFO doesn't need a six mile runway. Then again, even
the shuttle doesn't need that much. (I think it's around 3 miles).
So, what needs soooo much space and yet is fully maintained
underground?
