Yes, people and stores want this money, BUT, it's absolutely worthless. 
Tell me something John, how much gold/silver backs up one, just one, Federal 
Reserve note? 

I cannot eat gold and silver.  But I can take this "worthless" money
to the local store and buy 3 boxes of Mac & Cheese with it.  It seems
to work just fine as a medium of exchange.

Even if the economy breaks down someday, what makes you think that
gold will have any value?  You cannot eat or drink gold.  And if I
find you that you have gold, I will come over with my guns and ammo
(bought with the worthless stuff called money), and I will simply
take your gold.

Gold & silver have no real value outside of certain industrial
electronics applications.  Gold & silver costs money to store,
has a high mark-up margin, it tends to go down in value over
time, and it has no rate of return as an investment.  It is
all expense and no profit.  No wonder they call it "fools gold".
