I would imagine that the sound of the upper floors collapsing onto the
floors below may tend to make a booming sound, or in your world would all
of that falling concrete and steel be whisper quiet?
In "my world" NYC professional firefighters would have some idea of what
falling concrete and steel would sound like, and it would not prompt them to
gesticulate and say that it was like a series of detonators going off.
We can leave it to other readers here to decide if your position makes more
sense than that.
