Newbie? Maybe.
Nonetheless, I am happy today that he displayed some of the human
element. In effect, we surprised each other, but he had the gun.
I was "elected" to spend the night at my place of employment many years
ago after a windstorm blew the sign off the roof and through the plate
glass windows of the showroom.
The business owner was too inebriated to respond, so I drew the short
straw. The same type of thing was happening all over the area, and the
board-up services were unavailable. I spoke with some deputies on patrol
early in the evening and told them I would be staying in the building.
They told me they would inform the next shift that I was there.
Apparently that did not happen. It was cold, so I retreated to a small
office in the back corner of the showroom that had a small space heater.
About 2AM, I heard crunching sounds as someone was walking through the
broken glass outside the office door. I grabbed the doorknob and whipped
the door open, expecting to find some kid looking to walk off with some
merchandise.
Instead, I was facing the officer, who immediately placed his drawn
weapon in my face and said, "get on the floor!".
I said, "no problem"...;)
The details were sorted out within a minute or so, but I am glad he
excersized that split-second of restraint.
The way things are these days, that restraint might be a luxury in short
supply...

That Deputy musta been a Newbie. You can always provoke a "perp"
into giving ya an excuse to taser or club him, but deadly force? That's just
too
much paperwork.<wink>
