It's pretty well understood that the stresses of industrialized
beekeeping is pushing hives over the limit. Organic hives that aren't
trucked around aren't disappearing. It's basically stress from overuse
of the bees.
If you raise almonds (or whatever), just maintain your own hive and life
goes on.

Have Africanized bees had an effect on the hives and pollinixation(sp)
in general?
Just curious as I read Africanized bees were more violent and were
taking over hives PBS and was curious if they were less inclined to
pollinate or
do positive pollinization/work as per non-africanized bees...
---
perhaps similar to africanized nations and peoples vs. non-africanized
peoples in the western nations
introduce 'africoonization' and the real work-level drops and level of
violence increases----amazing how bees reflect real human life values/
society
The African strain of bees is not necessarily violent but
significantly more aggressive than the more common Italian strains
found in US apiaries. With this aggression comes a better work ethic
evidentally.
A better "work ethic"? Let me get this straight... Africanized bees
are migrating to the US from Central America without permission. It
sounds like they are doing the work that American bees don't want to
do.
Maybe we could build a wall?
They simply produce more than the Italian strain.
What you read was probably the standard story of the "killer bees"
dilemma which is esentially africanized bees taking over italian bee
hives and turning what would, in the world of beekeeping, be
considered normally docile hives into very aggressive ones. The
problem becomes handling the hives. Even the slightest disturbance of
a hive of "killer bees" will result in a mass of really pissed off
bee's attacking you- literally hundreds or even thousands of bees
looking to sting you..
So to answer your question, probably yes. African bees have had an
effect on the bee colonies in the US but there are a couple of notes
to that. A) it has really only occured in the southern states.Once you
get into the colder states it becomes more difficult to maintain hives
during the bitter cold winters and as such the african bees that have
been migrating north from South America haven't seemed to make it much
further north than say, Arizona. They simply die off in winter and $
B) the large apiaries keep a very close eye on their colonies and will
destroy any hive that has been infiltrated by these African bees. While
they work their little bee asses off they are far too aggressive and
not worth the risk.
