I'd hazard to guess it's in the range between 60K and 100K, not counting
overtime and benefits.

This is more than I thought - as you say it would depend a lot on the
amount of training each person had - and rank. I'd been comparing the
pay of US border guards, who get about 50k, but then again, I hadn't
taken into consideration the firearms training.

I'd do if for $100k - anything less... maybe not. Most of the time
the job must be incredibly boring an mundane.

to hear them tell it, their pay checks are well below the civil
service employees they work beside ( both pay and benefits )
and civil service is NOWHERE near those pay levels !

even stepped out GS-12 supervisors barely make it to $70k
in over 20 years service .......... people like guards are usually
lower pay blue collar WG style pay grades.

the civilian contractors must come in well below what it would cost
the government to do the work or there is no point to using them !

the " wackenuts " evidently being the worse of them all , you would
probably be surprised at how little the training and skill set level
for these civilian contractor employees really is ! they seem
basically interchangeable with their bonded , warehouse guard,
counter parts. the civilian contractors rarely get to see " anything
" so their security clearance issues are minimal ( doesn't take a
serious clearance to guard a pile of slightly radioactive dirt ).
places where " something important " is at hand are nearly always
guarded by government or military personnel with the contractors
doing the ( less important ) outside , perimeter security work !

among all the security personnel , the government GS paygrade guards
seem well trained and the marine and / or navy security personnel
being the top notch people. they won't even talk to you or crack a
smile ( when you joke with them < " Oooops , hope this doesn't blow if
I drop it !!!! " >) ! seriously serious , kind of scary when they
are standing there with that full auto gun strapped to their chest
and that grim look on their face behind their ever present shades !
