Thanks for the Nellis pics.
The question I want to ask is - how much was it to get in? I go to
the odd airshow myself, just curious.
The show is free. Parking was $3 this year. Nellis has the tightest
security of any air show I've been to, though I've never been to
Andrews. [I suspect they do cavity searches there.]
Not unless you as(s)k for it. Parking for Andrews is WAAAAY offsite
now, with shuttle buses to and fro (the smarter thing to do is take
Metro in). You go through a bag check and metal detector before you
even get on the shuttle bus, and you can't take in your own food/water/
etc., but in a sense it's no different than going on a commercial
flight. And once you're there, it's no hassle at all, and typically a
great show. Heck, at the 2001 show, they had a B-2 on static display.
Post 9/11, the airshow attendance dropped off. I have no records, but
that is my perception. People didn't want to deal with the hassles.
The no backpack rule was really a pain since I like to carry a few
lenses. Fortunately, the qualification to get media passes are much
more relaxed. The DoD more or less figured out that the age of their
recruits means they don't read magazines or newspapers, but surf the
net.
I never got the no backpack rule, but you could bring a baby carriage.
A minor annoyance at Edwards is you can't bring the bag that holds
your holding chair. I suppose somebody could hide a rifle in one, but
how did you get the firearm on base in the first place?
The only time I saw security cart somebody out was at Edwards. There
is no smoking by the flightline, period. Some guy without a shirt but
with plenty of prison tats insisted on smoking by the flightline.
Security was nice the first time, too nice, but anyone with brains
knows the second time won't be pleasant. Well, it was pleasant for
those observing the removal of the jerk.
