I've been using a socket 939 on Nforce4

I have a legacy nForce3, no 64 bit drivers anywhere.

I have the full 4G working.

Isn't 4Gb the max you can use with XP 32 bit - so to use more than 4Gb
you'd have to go 64 bit anyway.

Flash works fine,

Is this 32 bit flash running as a plugin on Firefox?

The other thing I wasn't too sure about 64bit windows, is applications
that are native 32bit, do they run in 32 bit address space, or is it
compatibility mode? I know that isn't a very informed question.

And what about anti virus... can you get some for x64 - actually I've
just remembered I have a version of Symantec AV 64bit.

I'm tempted to try a 64bit Linux distro... but would it be worth is?

If you want to run nvidia software raid, Suse is the only way to go.
It has the software drivers built in. This is actually less work than
X64 since X64 requires the 3rd party drivers to be added via floppy
during the installation process. If you plan on running any linux
native programs, they really work better on a linux machine. I also
use the suse box as my server. Suse 10.3 has some sort of bug in their
64 bit version, so use 10.2. I run 10.3 on my 32 bit notebook.

I have run a few program that used around 3Gbytes worth of resources
on Suse 10.2 GRASS is one of them. Also GIMP, which I sometimes use on
the large Groom panoramas.

I haven't figured out why, but some programs on Suse require the 32
bit libraries, even if you are installing from a tarball. When you can
get the programs to install as 64 bit applications, the programs that
require heavy calculations run like a bomb. Spice for example. I
believe the 64 bit machines do double precision floating point
calculations totally in hardware.

My recollection is java under suse 10.2 has a larger memory capability
than java under X64. Imagej hits a 2Gbyte limit when run under X64.

Avast provides a free 64 bit antivirus.

MS has a program called WOW. It allows 32 bit apps to run on the 64
bit OS. It is transparent to the user. Programs that are true 64 bit
are found under "program files", while 32 bit programs are located
under"program files (x86)".

Just a handful of programs are true 64 bit. One is 7-zip. It gets
about a 10% boost under 64 bit OS. Valve's HalfLIfe2 has a 64 vit
version. It was added in midstream. They enhanced the graphics with
the extra computer power.

I can play swf (flash) on 64 bit firefox. The 64 bit windows versions
of mozilla are not provided by mozilla. I use the versions from "Bon
Echo"

If you decide to use the Core 2 Duo rather than AMD chip, you need to
make sure you have the Santa Rosa chip set. Some of the intel chip
sets can't do 4GBytes I believe the AMD chip set doesn't have this
problem. Check out:
