Have you been to Chuck Clark's repeater site on Tempiute? It has a
view to Vegas TV stations, but as you know that is different from
seeing Vegas itself. I don't think any of Chuck's gear is actually
repeating anything, so the site should be quiet.
I've never heard of a repeater site anywhere around the base
or Rachel. I'm not sure I understand "not repeating". Is it
no longer in service? I would guess it's likely a good site
for any kind of comms.
I've done simplex before (pre-arranged mountain topping),
but never weak signal in the blind. Do you listen for a
station, or just pick a frequency and CQ CQ?
I rarely call CQ. I listen on the calling freq's and up/down
a couple of clicks. Start answering a few stations or calling
a few stations you can hear, let 'em know you're weak remote
and the hits will start pouring in.
40m was up and down yesterday, likewise 20.
But my little Yaesu 857 all band/mode and the
ATAS antenna (auto tune srewdriver) was getting
out on 100w from Phoenix to most parts of the
continental US. That antenna is about a 5' whip,
mounted on my van roof (or a tin shed roof
when I'm backyard remote).

They have a defunct TV translator site. The gear is still up there.
There was no incentive to fix it since analog TV was going bye bye.

on Google Earth. Clearly, the roads on GE are wrong.
It's about 6200ft. It has a window to some Vegas TV, but as you know,
that doesn't mean it can see Vegas. If you get up the terrain and
point N to the right side of the screen, you will see the last climb
is a bit exciting.
