Websites these days cost nothing to run. My ISP took the data transfer
limit off year ago, just charging for space on the server. However,
poking around the range does cost money given the cost of gas. Then
again, you are having fun poking around the range.
Even if I wanted to charge money or plaster the website with adverts,
there is additional cost of the CPA to process the money. Twenty bucks
here or there isn't all that useful when the CPA gets $150 an hour.
Advert revenue could probably be written off against gas, but if you
run something like a business, the IRS eventually expects you to turn
a profit. If it looks like you are just creating write-offs, you will
get on their radar.
