I haven't poked around there, but my understanding is China Lake to
some degree is like the Navy's Area 51. They have a RCS too. It
border's Death Valley, so you better have a dependable ride if you
snoop from the north.

You can drive into it from near Manson's old place.
I've seen RV'rs camping at the abandoned airstrip/
RR grade just inside the North border.
You'd be on the top of a hill overlooking most
of what's happening.

They used to give tours. Don't know if they still do.
At least they openly exist and describe what they do.
No doubt there are things they do that aren't quite
so public. But I think they're a little more like
the NTS than A-51.

Somebody is beaconing APRS packets as "AREA51"
today. Here's the raw packet -

Position of AREA51 --- 155.1 miles northwest of
North Las Vegas, NV --- Report received

Raw packet:

Just a little north of Warm Springs, SR 375 and US 6.

Here it is on the findu map -http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=area51&terra=4

He is camped at the Warm Springs repeater site. I am amazed anyone got
up the hill since there has to be snow.

It has a nice view. You can see the TTR and much of the norther Nellis
range, plus Basecamp.

I have a book on Death Valley. The Mason ranch is supposed to be a
pretty nasty drive. I think I will do it only if I can get another 4WD
to follow.
