SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- An $11 million state ad campaign called me-
not-meth is aimed at ending the wrath of the drug's abuse in gay
and bisexual male populations.
The Department of Alcohol and Drug programs did extensive
research on meth use in California and what they found astounded
them.
Crystal meth use is 11 times more common among gay and bisexual
men than in California's overall population. Of the 549 gay and
bisexual men surveyed, 55 percent said they used crystal meth.
Dr. Flynn Martinez said some gay men use methamphetamine in
conjunction with sex because they said it prolongs the sexual
act and pleasure.
Experts said the drug lowers inhibitions, increasing the
likelihood users may engage in unprotected sex.
According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, the San
Francisco AIDS Foundation found nearly one in every three gay or
bisexual men who tested positive for HIV in 2004 used meth.
"That's a bad combination for AIDS, and Hepatitis C, Syphilis --
and we have a virtual epidemic of Syphilis in the gay community
partly built on meth use," Martinez said.
