In case you were fortunate enough to miss the show, the Area 51
segment of "Katie and Peter: The Next Chapter, Stateside" aired on May
21 in the UK on ITV2. The episode was season 4, episode 6. If you
look around it can be found on Bittorrent or Usenet.
Here's my synopsis: Katie and Peter are a famous celebrity couple in
the UK, famous for being....well...pretty. They don't appear to have
much obvious talent and are pretty much spoiled wankers, especially
Katie. Anyway, this season they visit the US (Malibu) and make a trip
out to Las Vegas and Area 51 to look for UFOs. The Area 51 segment is
about 22 minutes long. It starts with them driving out to what
appears to be Alamo and hooking up with their tour guide, "Robert".
From Alamo they drive out to the border on Groom Lake Road with Robert
spouting off a surprising amount of misinformation for a "guide".
They are followed down Groom Lake Road by a black SUV, which stops
when they stop and freaks them out, thinking it's security. This also
freaks out Robert.
But when the camera zooms in on the vehicle, it's obvious from the
front grill that it's a frakking Volvo. Cammo Dudes don't drive
Volvos, which a "guide" should know. But our heroes turn bravely
around and drive past the mystery vehicle to confront them. Turns out
it's paparazzi, snapping pics of the pretty couple. Yeah, on Groom
Lake Road. So they turn for the border once again and take the
obligatory pics at the sign, and seemed disappointed as to the lack of
the "Deadly Force" statement. The Cammo Dudes were watching fromt
heir hilltop, no doubt shaking their heads. Then on to Rachel and the
Little Ale' Inn.
But the photographers follow and our merry band takes refuge in the
Inn. The Inn takes pity on them and locks their doors to keep the
paparazzi out! Lots of crazy talk in the Inn about the folks at Area
51 being able to hear conversations in people's cars as they drive the
ET Highway, because, well...they have SATELLITES! Of course, now for
the first time Katie and Peter seem like the sane ones.
But Katie and Peter want to go out in the dark and look for UFOs and
the nasty paparazzi are lurking about. So Cody, from the Inn, goes
home and returns with a shotgun, which he then goes outside with and
claims to have popped a few rounds off in the paparazzi's direction.
This apparently removes that problem but throughly validates any
notion that the Inn is full of red neck nut jobs. Good to know that
even though the people might change, some things remain constant.
So somehow they offload Robert, and Cody guides them to the back gate
in a separate vehicle. It appears very late and there doesn't look
like anyone is at home in the guard shack. Cody suggests they might
like to go up to "Fort Sims" and offers that they can stop by his
house for blankets. Peter says "no thanks" and that they've already
seen "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (Maybe Peter's not such a wanker after
all). So Cody departs and the Brits hang around the gate for a
while, seeing a UFO. It was a distant light that went on and off and
changed in brightness. With that they return to Vegas and enough
video to thrill gullible British audiences.
For starters they filmed for 11 hours and showed about 20 minutes of
it. They obviously wanted an Alien/UFO show. It was totally edited
to show that. To start with, I talked for about 10 minutes explaining
what and who the "cammo dudes" are and drive, so obviously I didn't
know who was following us, but I absolutely knew that it wasn't the
"cammo dudes" when they were close enough to see. I was totally
surprised to see paparazzi, that is true. I spent quite a lot of time
telling them about Area 51's history and none of it was on the show.
The only thing that made it contained the alien/ufo aspect. That is
what they wanted. An example of the problems with this type of tour,
I was talking about the various types of sensors believed to be out
there and they played the audio of me talking about listening devices
and they showed the cameras at the warning signs. And no, they didn't
leave me at the Little A Le Inn, I took them down to the back gate,
but they wanted to focus on the "Rachel resident with a gun". I spent
about 15 minutes trying to convince them that what they were seeing
near the back gate was probably flares since it was during Red Flag.
The lights were mysterious, but I am sure it was from Red Flag.
Obviously, they didn't show that. I am not happy the way the episode
turned out, but I am not shocked. The more familiar you become with
Area 51, the more it will make sense to you that TV people (especially
from Europe) only want the Alien/UFO connection to Area 51. They got
what they wanted. Yes it did make me look like a dork at times, but I
knew that was pretty much how it was going to end. In the past two
years, I have probably been out to Area 51 thirty-five times. I am
not an expert or a so called Area 51 researcher (nor do I pretend to
be like so many others), but I know enough of the basics. It didn't
appear that way in the video, but they got what they wanted on film.
When I went to the Palms to pick them up, they thought we were going
to Roswell. They didn't really know the difference! Honestly, they
were really nice people and had a great time. I guess it was all
worth it. Your synopsis was basically right except for the
misinformation on my part. That was more the fault of the editing.
You shouldn't have been surprised with the outcome. That is what they
want in Europe. Do you honestly think the history of black projects
would have been entertaining for Katie, Peter, or the audience. I did
spend some time on that "stuff". Where do you think that footage
ended up? Oh well, just thought I would throw in a little background
to the episode.
