Yes. The ranchers lease the land. Now how exactly this works would be
a bit of research. I can't believe the lease goes up to bid yearly
since the ranchers have put in infrastructure (fences and water). I
have to assume the BLM has also allowed them to buy some land outright
for their homes.

OK, make that AUM rather than AGU.
The contracts should be public knowledge since they go out to bid
periodically. Maybe the AGU is for growing alfalfa. I know I heard the
term someplace.
