Peter is an excellent historian.  That piece that he wrote has been
around for a while.  He really does his research.  To me it is
actually just mincing words.  There is no question in my mind that
Area 51 has been as classified as classified can get.  Sure there have
been news articles early on about the construction and softball games,
but what goes on there, who works there, has all be classified since
day one.  I have always go a bad vibe from that article.  I don't
question Peter's research at all.  He is truly a top notch Area 51
researcher.

Merlin's article, while crammed full of facts, does have a certain
semantic angle to it. Whoever was running it over the years always
went to great lengths to keep it from the public eye. Was its
existence classified in the strictest interpretation of the word?
Well, no, because it's next to impossible to classified something
that's in somewhat plain sight. But in the cases where the "Area
51" label did appear on maps or documents, it was usually done by
outside agencies who weren't a part of Area 51. And to this day when
you ask someone who does work there where they work, look at the
evasive answers you get. When you have a major facility whose name
apparently can't even be mentioned by those that work there, then you
have a de facto secret facility. Argue the semantics all you want.
