CRYSTAL -- On Friday, in broad daylight around 1:30 p.m., Earl
Griffin, 70, flew his single-engine Piper Cherokee head on into a car
driven by an acquaintance, David G. Smith, 67, who was driving on
Laurel Avenue near the town of Crystal.

According to the Nye County Sheriff's Office, Griffin was buzzing
Smith, flying low over his car, when "for some unknown reason, the
pilot took the aircraft too low" and the left main landing gear struck
Smith's Ford Explorer on the left side of the vehicle's hood, crushing
the roof.

Griffin made an emergency landing on a nearby street and escaped
without injury. However, Smith was airlifted to University Medical
Center in Las Vegas for treatment.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.
Private planes may not fly less than 500 feet above any person,
vehicle or structure.
