A few sure signs that the writer of a message on Usenet is a kook: 
The writer claims that the government is suppressing the knowledge that
would prove his theory correct. 
The writer claims that it is only a massive conspiracy by scientists to
suppress the truth that keeps his theories from being accepted. 
The writer claims that science hates change, is stuck in the mud or has
a vested interest in suppressing new theories. 
The writer claims that science is simply another belief system or that
it is no better than a religion. 
The writer compares science to a cult, an exclusive club or the "old
boy's network." 
The writer claims that his theories can't be tested by "traditional"
scientific means. 
The writer uses phrases like "higher density" or "higher vibrational
level." 
The writer claims that Einstein was wrong. 
The writer claims that Einstein would agree with him. 
The writer brags about his alleged high IQ. 
The writer rages about the uselessness of higher education. 
The writer claims that his PhD in English Literature qualifies him as an
expert in Nuclear Physics. 
The writer accuses his critics of still believing the Earth is flat. 
The writer makes references to things like suppressed alien technology,
remote viewing, The Philadelphia Experiment, cold fusion, free energy,
crop circles, channeling, etc. 
The writer cites people like Sitchen, Von Daniken, Reich, Cayce,
Nostradamus, Gellar, etc. 
The writer claims that his ideas came to him as a result of expanding
his consciousness through drug use, or that drug use makes his ideas
more understandable. 
This is by no means a complete list of kook signs. However it should
give the novice "kookspotter" a good start.
