THE EIGHTFOLD PATH
Part Five: ISOLATION
by Inanna Arthen

Excerpt:
http://www.earthspirit.org/fireheart/fhefiso.html

"... At the farthest extreme, sensory deprivation
and perceptual deprivation experiments in
laboratories have explored the influence of
isolation, not just from other people, but from
the physical world itself. Sensory deprivation,
as achieved in flotation tanks like those popular-
ized by John Lilly [<http://www.johnclilly.com/>]
& <http://www.disinfo.com/pages/dossier/id68/pg1/>]
and the film, Altered States, attempts as far as
possible to isolate the very mind, throwing it
completely upon its own resources - or upon input
from other than the five senses being restricted.
Subjects in sensory deprivation experiments
report a wide variety of consistent effects,
including vivid and complex hallucinations,
memory recall, changes in body image, and
persistent, vivid dreams. Flotation tank subjects
who worked with John Lilly found that when the
mind is isolated from the body itself, it begins
to freely recreate reality. In very short periods
of time, Lilly's subjects experienced vivid
dreamlike encounters. memory playbacks, mythic
visualizations and other effects.

"Although sensory deprivation experiments are
intriguing, they obviously represent an
unnecessary extreme. Social isolation for
extended periods accomplishes equally dramatic
results. But why should simple isolation -
voluntary separation from human company - have
such a profound effect?

"Our definition of what we call 'reality' is created
by our minds based on several factors that all
affect one another. We tend to imagine that what
we experience through our senses is 'reality.'
In fact, what we think about our sensory input
controls not only our interpretation of our senses,
but what perceptions are allowed to make an
impression at all. Our minds are excellent editors,
and they have been trained in this way by the
constant cues we receive from other people in our
environment. The urge to conform to social patterns
is an overwhelming one. Human beings have proven
themselves capable of adapting not only to the
social structure of thousands of incredibly varied
cultures. but also to the structures of non-human
societies. From the moment we are born, we respond
to countless visual, verbal, emotional and even
psychic cues, which teach us how to build our inner
models of the world. This web of social reinforcement
is so addictive that most people experience great
anxiety when they are separated from it - isolation,
with no other uncomfortable conditions, is recognized
as a source of extreme stress. In the absence of
actual people, individuals in our society often rely
on the constant reinforcement of television or radio.
The instant that societal cues are removed, our grasp
of consensual reality begins to decay.

"Witches, shamans and other kinds of magick workers
often lived on the fringes of their society, and
therefore always occupied a frame of reference that
was more or less different from that of their
community. At the extreme, such a person may have
acted in bizarre ways, responding to perceptions
that were invisible to other people. In other cases,
the magick worker was able to effectively live in
both worlds, acting as a translator or conduit.
But in order to maintain this position she had to
stay semi-isolated. This is often true for Witches
and Pagans today. Many of us grew up more or less
isolated from our social peer group, and our personal
reality includes many concepts that we easily forget
are not shared by those around us. The training of a
magick worker, now as in the past, involves the
restructuring of his or her experience of reality
more than it does the imparting of specific skills.
We cannot learn to travel on the astral plane until
the astral plane is included in our definition of
reality. In order to accomplish this restructuring,
a certain degree of detachment from society is
needed. Serious students of magick may withdraw
from old friends and begin spending far more time
alone than they once did.

"But living apart from society, and, hence, in a
slightly different reality, is not the same as
applying isolation as a specific magickal tool.
When we choose to isolate ourselves from other
people and turn away from the cushion of human
society in a concentrated, controlled way, we are
thrown into confrontation with ourselves.
By deliberately separating from the consensual web
for an extended period (closing our door, turning
off the television, walking into the woods), we
open ourselves to a profound - and possibly
permanent - change. Cutoff from the unending stream
of external cues, the mind begins to rely upon its
own perceptions to fill in the growing cracks. We
find ourselves seeking more and more perceptual
material, and doorways that we were taught to close
long ago slowly creak open." [...] -- INANNA ARTHEN

"But was it new? As far back as 1919,
writer Charles Fort had been collecting
accounts of inexplicable anomalies, including
strange objects seen in the sky. Fort was a
philosopher and a humorist, and he proposed
many tongue in cheek theories to explain the
events he described. One of his favorites
was that the Earth did not belong to mankind,
but in fact was a sort of cosmic game
reserve, owned by a race of superbeings.
He summed up this idea in the pithy aphorism:
'I think we are property.'

On the matter of these fey MIBs, I've heard a few
interesting tales. One of the old guys, who had
been in the fraternity since before WWII, had
collected some stories from the usually-evasive
elementals. One tale, which they apparently enjoyed
bragging about was the role they played in the evolution
of American music. It seems this handsome young black
fellow was doing a little voodoo ceremony at a rural
crossroads. This attracted the interest of a couple of
elementals, who find such things compelling. After
doing his ritual, this young man sat down by the roadside
and began picking at a guitar. It occured to one of
these elementals that he could help the boy out,
so he shape-shifted a bit (to look the part) and walked
right up to the musician. He took the guitar from the
player's hand and re-tuned it. Played an unusual melody
on it, then handed it back. The contact with his returned
guitar had a "shaktipat" effect on him. Suddenly he was
a brilliant and charismatic musician. But, when gifted
by a muse, there is that unfortunate fact that you burn
twice as bright but for half as long. These elementals
claim that they've intervened in human history since
time immemorial, because they need us for their own
evolution. They allege to have introduced drums and
double-reed flutes to our remotest stone age ancestors,
gave us witchcraft, and even got us interested in
psychoactive substances, which they claim were
instrumental in the evolution of the human brain.

"As immense as that game is, there is a bigger one:
Control through fear. As Wernher von Braun
related to Dr. Carol Rosin, his spokesperson for
the last 4 years of his life, a maniacal machine - the
 military, industrial, intelligence, laboratory
complex - would go from Cold War, to Rogue
Nations, to Global Terrorism (the stage we find
ourselves at today), to the ultimate trump card:
 A hoaxed threat from space.

"To justify eventually spending trillions of dollars
on space weapons, the world would be deceived
about a threat from outer space, thus uniting the
world in fear, in militarism, and in war."

 "A Beautiful Mind"
 John F. Nash, Jr.
  Born: June 13, 1928

John Nash himself associated his madness with his
living on an "ultralogical" plane, "breathing air too
rare" for most mortals, and if being "cured" meant
he could no longer do any original work at that
level, then, Nash argued, a remission might not be
worthwhile in the end.

John F. Nash, Jr. -- Autobiography
Quote:
[...]
During academic 1956 - 1957 I had an Alfred P. Sloan
grant and chose to spend the year as a (temporary)
member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.

During this period of time I managed to solve a classical
unsolved problem relating to differential geometry which
was also of some interest in relation to the geometric
questions arising in general relativity. This was the
problem to prove the isometric embeddability of abstract
Riemannian manifolds in flat (or "Euclidean") spaces. But
this problem, although classical, was not much talked
about as an outstanding problem. It was not like, for
example, the 4-color conjecture.

So as it happened, as soon as I heard in conversation at
M.I.T. about the question of the embeddability being
open I began to study it. The first break led to a curious
result about the embeddability being realizable in
surprisingly low-dimensional ambient spaces provided
that one would accept that the embedding would have
only limited smoothness. And later, with "heavy
analysis", the problem was solved in terms of
embeddings with a more proper degree of smoothness.
[...]
Thus further time passed. Then gradually I began to
intellectually reject some of the delusionally influenced
lines of thinking which had been characteristic of my
orientation. This began, most recognizably, with the
rejection of politically-oriented thinking as essentially a
hopeless waste of intellectual effort.

So at the present time I seem to be thinking rationally
again in the style that is characteristic of scientists.
However this is not entirely a matter of joy as if
someone returned from physical disability to good
physical health. One aspect of this is that rationality of
thought imposes a limit on a person's concept of his
relation to the cosmos. For example, a non-Zoroastrian
could think of Zarathustra as simply a madman who led
millions of naive followers to adopt a cult of ritual fire
worship. But without his "madness" Zarathustra would
necessarily have been only another of the millions or
billions of human individuals who have lived and then
been forgotten. [...]

"On the afternoon of January 20th, 1959,
Nash, brandishing that day's copy of the
New York Times, walked into the mathematics
lounge at MIT. In a strong voice he announced
that he'd discovered that the little box in
the upper left-hand corner (the off-lede)
carried a message from outer space aliens to
the governments of earth, which he alone was
able to decipher."

Instead of writing this off to Nash's
schizophrenia, the Cyberculture volume
notes that there really was something
weird about the NY Times off-lede, in
the line box surrounding the motto
"All the news that's fit to print",
and reproduces several examples.
The Cyberculture book comments that
"Nash, indeed was alone among earth
mathematicians to notice the subtle
alien code."

George Mackey from Harvard Math asks Nash
how he can believe in ET's

Mackey: "How could you believe that
   extraterrestrials are sending
   you messages? How could you
   believe that you are being
   recruited by the aliens from
outer space to save the world?"

Nash: "Because the ideas I had about
 supernatural beings came to me
the same way that my mathematical
ideas did. So I took them seriously."

One of the first manifestations of Nash's
schizophrenia was his belief that aliens were
sending him secret coded messages through the
New York Times and over radio stations.
(He also, at other times, attempted to
renounce his U.S. citizenship, and traveled
to Europe believing he was a secret religious
figure chosen to be the Prince of Peace.)

James Oberg [Excerpt from: 'Everything is Under Control' by
             Robert Anton Wilson - 1998 ISBN 0-06-273417-2]

James Oberg, a longtime skeptic of the extraterrestrial
interpretation of the UFO phenomenon, has more than once
suggested a rather conspiritorial countertheory.

In June 1980, Moscow had a major UFO flap. People saw a
giant light and some claimed that aliens were chasing cars
and drilling holes through house windows. Tens of thousands
of citizens allegedly saw some or all of this weirdity.
In _Omni_ magazine, Oberg proposed that the KGB was behind
it: "The KGB, eager to muddy the waters and cover up public
recognition of the military space center at Pietsk, is only
too happy to promote scintillating stories about aliens
chasing cars and boring nasty holes in windows."
More recently, Oberg has pointed an accusing finger at
agencies of the U.S. government:

   ... Government representatives--officials, military
officers, etc.--used "UFO" as a convenient camouflage
for other official classified activities (such as
retrieval of crashed aircraft or nuclear weapons or
other objects); or used artificial "UFO stories"
(in oral, written, photographic, film, etc. form) as
"tracers" in studying the function of security
safeguards and personnel psychological responses; or
used "UFO" as an excuse (either intended or accidental)
to cover up improper, forbidden, or diplomatically
delicate activities... or any other activity that the
government--or any part of it--wanted to keep hidden.

Oberg made these charges in an open letter to Dr.
Steven Greer of the _CSETI_ organization, who is trying
to force the government to release UFO secrets. Oberg
supports Greer in wanting the secrets given to the public,
even though Greer expects the hidden data will support the
extraterrestrial hypothesis and Oberg believes it will just
show that the government lies to us a lot of the time.
Most conspiritologists would certainly like to see the
release of any alleged "UFO secrets" dealing with lost
nuclear weapons and "improper, forbidden, or diplomatically
delicate" activities.

"As Thomas Huxley said, the universe acts a lot like a chess game
in which the player on the other side remains invisible to us.
By analyzing the moves, we try to form an image of the intellect
behind them. Images that have seemed almost believable to me at
various times have included the gods and goddesses of ancient
Greece (if you develop a Classic Poetry habit, that kind of
neurolinguistic programming can happen...) and also, of course,
those extra-terrestrials who have so much popularity these days.
I have also considered the player on the other side as more
impersonal, like the Tao, or more bizarre, like Shiva Dancing,
or more abstract, like Philip K. Dick's Vast Active Living
Information System (VALIS.) Mostly, though I think of the player
on the other side as a pookah -- a resident of Ireland, in rabbit
form, who may at any time dump a truckload of the Unknown and
Inexplicable right on your doorstep." --Robert Anton Wilson

to be yourself. The whole purpose of my talking to
