On July 21, 2003, Gary Sellani, long-time Groom Lake "watcher" and military
aviation researcher, unveiled the first photo of what appears to be a new
runway at Area 51. After correspondence with another observer, Sellani stated
that the runway has been there since January of 2003,
The black and white photo is shown on:

under the title, "Remodeling".
"While I buy into the UAV notion, I'm not sure there is or will be a fleet of
them in the former A-12 hangars. If you look at the photo under 'Open the
hangar door', the object in the hangar has a wing span of about 30ft based on
the 737 for reference, so that hangar may contain UAV. Most of the UAVs are
designed so that one control station can fly several UAVs, so a fleet of 4
would be quite probable", Sellani stated.
In the meantime, Joerg H. Arnu, webmaster of the largest online resource on
Area 51, posted photos taken by Chuck Clark, well-known military watchdog and
resident of Rachel, in July of 2003:
"Photos of the new tanks and runway at Area 51 can be found here:

Chuck Clark had stated earlier (on July 18, 2003) that "it would be a logical
assumption that the new runway is intended to support a 'new and aggressive'
UAV design and testing program that will most likely be based in the former
A-12 hangars". Clark had also confirmed that in addition to the new runway,
two very large new fuel tanks have recently appeared in the tank farm along
with one or two new smaller tanks".
