I direct your attention to the recent X-plane competition between
Lockheed and Boeing to design the next generation jet fighter, the
so-called Joint Task Force figher. As a recent graduate in Aeorspace
Engineering, and an alumni of the U.S. Naval Academy I can say with
authority that the $2 billion spent in this design competition was
totally wasted. They were required by the Pentagon to design and fly
a new vertical take off fighter. This aircraft will become the
standard for all the services. Yet, Lockheed's winning design devotes
so much of the aircraft to a huge fan in the middle of the fuselage
and an elaborate mechanism to direct discharage from the jet engines
downward; both features used for vertical take-off; that there is no
room left for any armaments because the aircraft cannot fly with any
more weight. Moreover, the fuel consumption is astronomical, reducing
the range drastically.
I believe this whole design competion had one purpose: to develop a
new UFO-type fighter aircraft. This new aircraft will use the
fuselage fan for extra lift, to augment existing "anti-gravity"
features.
