Vote Machine Owner Vows to Help Bush "Win", Cleveland Plain Dealer
The head of a company vying to sell voting machines in Ohio told
Republicans in a recent fund-raising letter that he is "committed to
helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president [sic] next year."
The Aug. 14 letter from Walden O'Dell, chief executive of Diebold Inc. -
who has become active in the re-election effort of President Bush -
prompted Democrats this week to question the propriety of allowing O'Dell's
company to calculate votes in the 2004 presidential election.

"LYNCHING BY LAPTOP" by Greg Palast and Ina Howard
At the dais, Martin Luther King spoke with the marchers: "We ask a
simple question. Do African Americans have the right to vote in the United
States of America?"
We have to blink. Speaking is Martin Luther King THE THIRD, son of the
late Nobel Laureate-and the year is 2003. Meeting in Birmingham in May, in
the run-up to the 40th anniversary celebration of his daddy's "I Have a
Dream" speech, King was warning that the man in the White House was hacking
the computers - and the result is a legalized attack on the Black voter
that could steal away 40 years of blood, sweat, tears and civil-rights
victories.
In 2002, with little public notice, Congress passed and the president
signed the "Help America Vote Act." When the Bush family wants to "help" us
vote, look out. Hidden behind the apple-pie-and-motherhood name lies a
nasty civil rights time-bomb.
The new law to "Help America Vote" will eat up $3.9 billion of
taxpayers' money, partly to tempt states and counties to adopt computerized
'touch-screen' voting. Why is King worried? The first elections with
computers produced vote-count horror shows that make one yearn for hanging
chads. In 2002, Comal County, Texas, tried out new computer voting
machines-and three Republican candidates each won their respective offices
with exactly 18,181 votes. "Isn't that the weirdest thing?" County Clerk
Joy Treater asked at the time. "We noticed it right away, but it is just a
big coincidence."
Just down the road in Scurry County, Texas, two unexpected landslide
wins for Republican candidates struck election clerks as just one
coincidence too many. That county's clerk, Joan Bunch, investigated and
found that a "faulty" computer chip had caused the county's optical scanner
to record Democratic votes as Republican instead....
...The ethnic cleansing of black voters from the Florida registries,
and the new plan to infect the nation with the Bush Administration's Jim
Crow computer scheme, is the wake-up call for a new activism that must be
fought in the Birminghams and Selmas of cyberspace. Now it's your turn.

"Death Rocks Brazil" By MARCELO BALLVE Pacific News Service (08-26-03)
"The headline of the Rio de Janeiro daily Jornal do Brasil put it most
starkly: "Brazilian Peace Hero Dies in Iraq Attack."
"The death in Baghdad of Sergio Vieira de Mello, the 55-year-old
United Nations special representative in Iraq, has convulsed Brazil.
"Brazilians were exceedingly proud of Vieira De Mello's stature as a
peacemaker. He was widely seen as the favorite to succeed Kofi Annan as
U.N. Secretary General.
..."foreign affairs chief Paulo Delgado praised Vieira de Mello for
standing up to the United States: "He took a firm position with the United
States, demanding that they re-establish water and electricity in Iraq."
..."Brazil's media republished lengthy interviews in which Vieira de
Mello evocatively described the resentment welling up in the Iraqi
population. He openly pushed for full Iraqi control of the country by 2004,
a quicker training of an all-Iraqi police force and referred to the
occupation as "humiliating" for Iraqis.
..."He also was frank in describing his fear of being a target.
Mentioning the tongue-in-cheek Brazilian saying that claims "God is
Brazilian," Vieira de Mello told the Jornal do Brasil that he hoped the
saying meant God would offer him special protection.
"The conservative Estado newspaper noted that the U.S. military was
responsible for providing security at the U.N. headquarters. Only days
before the attack, the paper noted, Vieira de Mello personally complained
to United Nations authorities that the security at the building seemed
inadequate."...

"Here is a Web log by an Iraqi woman who was a computer programmer. It

"PASS IT ON IF YOU DONT HAVE TIME TO READ IT, OR IF YOU DO.:
"Girl Blog from Iraq... let's talk war, politics and occupation."
...Wednesday, August 20, 2003: "Dazed"
"Sergio de Mello's death is catastrophic. We are all a little bit
dazed. He was, during these last few months, the best thing that seems to
have happened to Iraq. In spite of the fact that the UN was futile in
stopping the war, seeing someone like de Mello gave people some sort of
weak hope. It gave you the feeling that, no, the Americans couldn't run
amuck in Baghdad without the watchful of eye of the international community.
"Bremer is trying to link it to 'resistance' and Al-Qaeda... this is a
new type of attack. *This* is terrorism, Mr.Bush... not the attack on
occupying forces- that's resistance. Attacking humanitarian organizations
you could not, or would not, protect. A type of terrorism Iraqis hadn't
seen until this occupation- we never had people bombing the UN or
embassies, no matter how difficult things got. The UNSCOM were definitely
unloved here, but they were protected. America, as an occupying power, is
responsible for the safety and security of what is left of this country.
They are responsible for the safety and security of any international
humanitarian organizations inside of the country to help the people. They
have been shirking their duties horribly... but you would think someone
like Sergio de Mello could have gotten better.
"Somehow I'm terrified. If someone like de Mello couldn't, or simply
wasn't, protected- what's going to happen to the millions of people needing
protection in Iraq? How could this have been allowed to happen?"...

4) UK / BLAIR'S "HUTTON INQUIRY" (Dr. David Kelly's "suicide")
============================
[the death of David Kelly used as a smokescreen, a distraction from the
critical issue of Blair's pre-war lies re "Iraq can attack UK with WMDs in
45 minutes":]
"Defence secretary under fire over his attempt to curb questioning of David
Kelly" by Vikram Dodd, The Guardian, Wednesday August 27, 2003
The defence secretary, Geoff Hoon, was yesterday attacked for his
"monumental cheek" in trying to limit the questions MPs on a select
committee were allowed to ask David Kelly.
Labour MP Andrew Mackinlay told the Hutton inquiry of his anger that
Mr Hoon would only allow the weapons expert to testify on what he had told
the BBC reporter Andrew Gilligan. Mr Hoon wrote to the foreign affairs
committee to say Dr Kelly could not be questioned on his views about a
government claim that Iraq could launch weapons of mass destruction within
45 minutes.
Mr Mackinlay said: "I consider it a monumental cheek of the secretary
of state to try and tell us what we should and could inquire into and the
duration"...
James Dingemans QC, senior counsel to the inquiry, asked: "Did you
perceive you had the cooperation you ought to have done from the government?"
"Absolutely not," was the reply. The government refused to let MPs see
drafts of the September 2002 dossier, which would have revealed if the
language used for key claims had been hardened or not.
Mr Mackinlay accused ministers of obstructing scrutiny of their
actions and said he did not believe Dr Kelly had come forward of his own
volition: "I do not buy this business of him coming forward voluntarily. I
think the heat was on."
Mr Mackinlay said he was suspicious of two officials who sat behind Dr
Kelly as he testified and thought he had been leant on. "I immediately
started to imagine ... that these were the minders."
...Mr Mackinlay described Dr Kelly's performance as "very controlled"
during a session that saw the MP warn the weapons expert he could be
punished for contempt before the committee.
He defended his questioning of Dr Kelly when he appeared before the
committee on July 15...Mr Mackinlay asked the scientist: "I reckon you are
chaff, you have been thrown up to divert our probing. Have you ever felt
like a fall guy? You have been set up, have you not?"
He explained that he meant Dr Kelly was "chaff" in the military sense,
as in something sent up to distract an incoming missile.
Asked if his question was fair, he said it was, because the committee
had disbelieved the government claim that Dr. Kelly was the sole source for
Gilligan's report, and he believed the government knew Dr Kelly was not...
...He thought not answering the committee's questions amounted to a
high crime and misdemeanour. "I thought it was a prevarication,
inappropriate, not only unfair and unreasonable, it was a challenge to the
whole business of parliamentary scrutiny."
Mr Mackinlay said he was not interested in the row between the
government and the BBC. The MPs needed to hear from Dr Kelly to find out
the basis for the claim that the government had sexed up the dossier, if he
indeed was Gilligan's single source.

"Revealed: Last-minute Changes to Iraq Dossier" By Jo Dillon, Independent
Digital, Sunday 17 August 2003
The Government's dossier on Iraq's weapons capability was hardened up
in the days before its publication in a number of key respects that did not
tally with the views of some of its most senior experts, The Independent on
Sunday can reveal.
Scrutiny of documents released by the Hutton inquiry into the death of
the weapons expert Dr David Kelly reveals that not only were key claims
about the nature and extent of Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction
strengthened in the two weeks before the dossier's publication in September
2002 but that a crucial change was made to the title.
Right up until the publication of the final draft, and as late as 19
September, the document was entitled "Iraq's programme for weapons of mass
destruction". But on 24 September, when the Government published the
finished version, it left out the words "programme for".

"Oliver Stone Warns of US Ownership of UK Media" by Fiachra Gibbons,

"The film director Oliver Stone has warned that the independence of
British news media would be destroyed if US conglomerates were allowed to
buy into them.
"The maker of such films as Platoon and JFK ... said British
politicians were naively courting disaster.
"The communications bill enables foreign companies to buy terrestrial
channels such as ITV and Channel Five for the first time. Stone, who
screened Commandante at the Edinburgh Film Festival, said he feared the
change would undermine standards. "I was shocked at how superficial and
sentimental the American coverage of the Iraq war was - all Private Jessica
Ryan, and no coverage of civilian casualties. In Britain, you have a wider

"We are living in an age of spin. Now there is a law before parliament
which would allow the US media to buy into your media. That'll be the end
of the independent British media."

5) IRAQ
=======
"Who Are The Extremists?" by John Pilger; August 22, 2003
"The "liberation" of Iraq is a cruel joke on a stricken people. The
Americans and British, partners in a great recognized crime, have brought
down on the Middle East, and much of the rest of the world, the prospect of
terrorism and suffering on a scale that al-Qaeda could only imagine.
"That is what this week's bloody bombing of the United Nations
headquarters in Baghdad tells us.
"It is a "wake-up call", according to Mary Robinson, the former UN
Humanitarian Commissioner.
"She is right, of course, but it is a call that millions of people
sounded on the streets of London and all over the world more than seven
months ago - before the killing began.
"And yet the Anglo-American spin machine, whose minor cogs are
currently being exposed by the Hutton Inquiry, is still in production.
"According to the Bush and Blair governments, those responsible for
the UN outrage are "extremists from outside": Al-Qaeda terrorists or
Iranian militants, or both.
"Whether or not outsiders are involved, the aim of this propaganda is
to distract from the truth that America and Britain are now immersed in a
classic guerrilla war, a war of resistance and self-determination of the
kind waged against foreign aggressors and colonial masters since history
began"...
..."As for the "extremists from outside", simply turn the meaning
around and you have a succinct description of the current occupiers who,
unprovoked, attacked a defenseless sovereign country, defying the United
Nations and the opposition of most of humanity.
"Using weapons designed to cause the maximum human suffering - cluster
bombs, uranium-tipped shells and firebombs (napalm) - these extremists from
outside caused the deaths of at least 8,000 civilians and as many as 30,000
troops, most conscripted teenagers. Consider the waves of grief in any
society from that carnage.
"At their moment of "victory", these extremists from outside - having
already destroyed Iraq's infrastructure with a 12-year bombing campaign and
embargo - murdered journalists, toppled statues and encouraged wholesale
looting while refusing to make the most basic humanitarian repairs to the
damage they had caused to the supply of power and clean water."...

"War Criminals Hire War Criminals to Hunt Down War Criminals" By Chris
Floyd, Moscow Times 8/29/03
..."Naturally, the Iraqi people -- even the Bush-appointed leaders of

Saddam's goons return, flush with American money and firepower. And they're
certainly not reassured by the fact that the Bushists have also reopened
Saddam's most notorious prison, the dread Abu Ghraib, and are now,
Mukhabarat-like, filling it with Iraqis -- men, women and children as young

incommunicado, indefinitely, without due process, just like the old days.
As The Times of London reports, weeping relatives who dare approach the

Seized Iraq Funds All but Gone, U.S. Says
White House may make appropriation request to help pay wages and pensions.
August 27, 2003 LA Times From Reuters
http://tinyurl.com/lg34
WASHINGTON - U.S. authorities in Iraq have all but exhausted the seized
assets they have used to pay Iraqi civil servants, and some administration
and congressional officials said Tuesday that extra money might be needed
sooner than expected for U.S. efforts in the occupied nation.
Treasury Department spokesman Tony Fratto said a cash shipment of $419
million would be made soon from a New York Federal Reserve account that
once held $1.7 billion, and this would "nearly exhaust the available vested
funds." One U.S. lawmaker, after high-level meetings in Baghdad on the
funding issue, said other ways would be found to pay Iraqi salaries and
pensions, but a senior congressional aide called the situation "a mess."

"Gulf war syndrome worse this time around: Troops and Iraqi civilians alike
may be more at risk from depleted uranium and other poisons than in the
previous Gulf War" By Michael Nicholson
If the experience of British soldiers in the 1991 Gulf War is anything
to go by, thousands could fall gravely ill as a result of the current
conflict in Iraq. Twelve years after the conclusion of the first Gulf War,
it is now believed that the depleted uranium used in anti-tank shells, as
well as a variety of toxins and injections, may be the chief causes of what
has become widely known as Gulf War Syndrome.
Of the 45,000 British soldiers who went to the Gulf in 1991 more than
5,500 are currently receiving disability pensions - many of which they have
had to fight for. More are becoming ill and making fresh claims all the
time. Veterans are dying at the rate of one a week at an average age of 38.
...Uranium Dust the Chief Culprit
DU, a waste product of the nuclear power industry, is now used as
ammunition where its high density and ability to ignite and burn on impact
increases the capacity to destroy. DU "penetrators" can pass through the
heavy armour of large tanks. As it burns, DU releases a plume of fine
particles, which can be inhaled by soldiers nearby. The half-life of this
material is 4.5 billion years. DU 'bunker busters', as they were called in
Afghanistan, are believed to have produced increased radiation levels in
central Europe - over 2,000 miles away...

"Civilian War Deaths in Iraq", Jude Wanniski 8/21/03
You probably did not notice, but I doubt you have ever read an
estimate, formal or informal, of the number of Iraqi civilians who were
killed in the recent Gulf War. Collateral damage in the USA's "liberation"
of the Iraqi people. I'm not in any position to validate the report you
will see here from Dr. Mohammed Al-Obaidi, the general coordinator of the
Iraqi Freedom Party, but it does not seem unreasonable. I've run reports
really happening on the ground have proven far more accurate than the rosy
scenarios coming from the Pentagon. The report on civilian FATAL casualties
in a nation of 23 million is staggering, the equivalent in percentage terms
of 460,000 civilian deaths if such havoc were wrought in the US.
To add in the number of young Iraqi soldiers killed in the conflict -
an equal number? -- further staggers the mind. It is only when you
contemplate these horrific statistics can you understand why there is such
crazed hatred of the US and why it cannot be smothered by killing more
Iraqis...

"Horrifying US Secret Weapon Unleashed In Baghdad" By Bill Dash 8/25/03
"A nightmarish US super weapon reportedly was employed by American
ground forces during chaotic street fighting in Baghdad. The secret
tank-mounted weapon was witnessed in all its frightening power by Majid
al-Ghazali, a seasoned Iraqi infantryman who described the device and its
gruesome effects as unlike anything he had ever encountered in his lengthy
military service. The disturbing revelation is yet another piece of
cinematic evidence brought back from postwar Iraq by intrepid filmmaker
Patrick Dillon.
..."nothing in his extensive combat experience prepared him for the
shock of what he saw in Baghdad on April 12th.
"On that date, al-Ghazali and his family sheltered in their house as a
fierce street battle erupted in his neighborhood. In the midst of the
fighting, he noticed that the Americans had called up an oddly configured
tank. Then to his amazement the tank suddenly let loose a blinding stream
of what seemed like fire and lightning, engulfing a large passenger bus and
three automobiles. Within seconds the bus had become semi-molten, sagging
"like a wet rag" as he put it. He said the bus rapidly melted under this
withering blast, shrinking until it was a twisted blob about the dimensions
of a VW bug. As if that were not bizarre enough, al-Ghazali explicitly
describes seeing numerous human bodies shriveled to the size of newborn
babies. By the time local street fighting ended that day, he estimates
between 500 and 600 soldiers and civilians had been cooked alive as a
result of the mysterious tank-mounted device."...

"U.S. Clamps Secrecy on Warnings Before 9/11" by Marie Cocco, Newsday, 7
Aug 03
"It's not just the Saudi secret that's being kept.
"The recent report of the joint congressional committee that probed
intelligence failures before the terrorist attacks on the World Trade
Center and the Pentagon reveals what the Bush administration doesn't
want Americans to know about the American government.
"You would not know this from media accounts about this report. They
have dwelled on what the Bush administration doesn't want us to know
about the Saudi government.
"This is the famous 28-page chapter, a series of black lines across
page
after page, that the president refuses to declassify despite the
pleadings of the bipartisan group of lawmakers and the Saudi government
itself.
"The dustup over Saudi secrets is exquisitely convenient. It obscures
George W. Bush's relentless hold on U.S. secrets and on information he
maintains should be secret, though it has not necessarily been before
now."...

7) TOTALLY RECALLING / BUSH
=========
"Election Fraud in California!" 8/22/03 by crisispapers.org
There is a campaign to steal the votes of the anti-recall voters in
California. I know, it happened to me this afternoon (Thursday).
A call came in from a "survey." I was asked how I planned to vote in
the recall election. I replied that I intended to vote against it.
Then the scam: "We can arrange to have you vote from your home, so
that you need not go to the polling station."
There is no such "convenience" recognized by the State of California.
This was a deliberate scam devised to negate the anti-recall votes. It has
been done elsewhere, notably in Florida. In fact, it is not unlikely that
over 600 pro-Gore retirees in Florida lost their votes via this con in 2000
-- yet another trick sufficient to throw the election to Bush"...

"Fox bosses try to stifle giggles over recall" By Mike Cassidy, Mercury
News Aug. 27, 2003
...now, Arnold movie puns are out. John Moody, a Fox honcho, said in
his memo that such references `"belittle the front-runner for one of the
most important offices in the U.S. and that's not fair and balanced.(TM)'' ...

"Has ABC covered this? NBC? CBS? (We won't even ask about Fox.) Why
did Bill Clinton's "draft dodging" merit 13,641 major news stories, while
GW Bush's desertion merit only 49?

FOOD REVOLUTION ON WHEELS
In West Oakland, CA, the nonprofit group People's Grocery is
demonstrating another way of bringing fresh, local organic produce to
inner city neighborhoods. Dubbed the "Mobile Market", volunteers drive a
solar powered refrigerated truck through inner city neighborhoods,
selling fresh organic produce to residents in low income neighborhoods.
Grants to the group help pay for the truck and offset the higher prices
of the organic produce.

HOT, HOT, HOT!
Predictions of how climate change will damage global agriculture are
already proving true. So say scientists working on an advance crop yield
forecasting system through the European Commission. Thanks to this
year's relentless heat wave in Europe, crop losses have been eerily
fitting those predicted by computer models. "It's dangerous to push
these things under the carpet because we need to start planning now for
the impacts of climate change," said Dr. Jorgen Olesen of the Danish
Institute of Agricultural Sciences.

Saving our forests
Logging corporations and other natural resource companies could soon
be able to plow, bulldoze and pillage through our national forests.
The Bush administration is attempting to weaken the Roadless Area
Conservation Rule, opening these areas to corporate interests. Our
national forests are at risk.

We are currently in Alaska on our "Endangered Forests, Endangered
Freedoms" ship tour. We are using our largest ship, the Esperanza,
to explore, investigate and expose the impacts of large-scale
industrial logging on our largest national forest, the Tongass.

From our Executive Director: Weighing in on the Yucca mountain project
"The Bush administration has determined that it is good science and
sound public policy to ship thousands of tons of deadly radioactive
waste through virtually every major city in the U.S. to Yucca

Kill the drill on Padre Island
Home to endangered species, including the smallest and most
endangered sea turtle in the world, Padre Island, off the coast of
Texas, was designated a national seashore in 1962 to ensure its
protection from development and oil and gas drilling. However, the
Bush administration has sold Padre Island to companies like BNP for
oil and gas exploration. As early as this summer, Padre Island will
become the site of oil and gas rigs, 18-wheeler trucks and
environmental degradation.

The Rainbow Warrior sails to the whales of Iceland
Iceland recently announced the resumption of its "scientific
whaling" program. Our flagship Rainbow Warrior, with our
international executive director onboard, is now on its way to do
something about it.
Iceland's announcement is the first step toward a resumption of
full-scale whaling, the time to act is now.
