Actually one I built uses multiple  UV lasers like welding rods striking a
high voltage arc when they intersect. This can then be drawn apart like a
Jacobs ladder and the arc moves away destroying anything in its path. The
pattern is very fast and computer controlled enabling a large area to be
covered in a short time. The colour of the are depends on what is between
the arc.
