In article <bl38t6$451$1@pencil.math.missouri.edu>, Lars Bomm says...

NASA has been reshaping itself over the 1985 to
present period to use its shuttle fleet as a service
for the orbiting nuclear power plants that are to
provide power for the laser cannons & particle beams
of Star Wars, says Dr. Michio Kaku, prof. nuclear
physics @ CUNY.

This article is _thirteen_ years old but even at this point
it was recognized that the cost of a space based system
would be prohibitive and that ground based interceptors
would be the order of the day. Although some research
and development is continuing on space based systems
(IE: http://www.fas.org/spp/starwars/program/sbl.htm )
RTGs couldn't possibly supply the power required for
such a system. It's my belief that space based directed
energy weapons are a pipe dream. Maybe we'll have
twenty, or so, ground based interceptors by 2005.
