The Evolutionary Biology of REM Sleep
"We should note that REM is an ancient brain function
in mammals, to the best of our knowledge, fish and
reptiles exhibit no such state. REM sleep is rudimentary
in birds, occurring only in brief and infrequent episodes...
Using this evolutionary context as background, it is
unlikely that REM evolved de novo within the brain stem
of early mammals... Indeed, from a range of facts... we
might surmise that what is now known as REM mechanisms
originally controlled a primitive form of waking arousal.
With the evolution of higher brain areas, a newer and more
efficient waking mechanism may have been needed, leading
to the emergence of the ARAS [ascending reticular activating
system]. The more ancient form of arousal may have been
gradually overridden and relegated to providing a background
function such as the integration of emotional information
that seems to occur during dreaming. People who hold dream
experience in great esteem may be correctly affirming the
importance of affective information that is encoded through
our ancient emotional urges for the proper conduct of our
waking activities... As the new thalamocortical cognitive
mechanisms evolved, the old emotional arousal system
may have assumed the subsidiary role of doing
computations on the environmental relationships that had
transpired during waking, especially those with a strong
emotional content. In other words, the REM system may
now allow ancient emotional impulses to be integrated with
the newer cognitive skills of the more recently evolved brain
waking systems. This could help explain many striking
attributes of REM sleep, ranging from its heavy emotional
content to its apparent functions of enhancing learning and

Lee Smolin, researcher at the Perimeter Institute for
Theoretical Physics, author of Life of the Cosmos and
co-inventor of loop quantum gravity, said that these
are exciting times for physicists.
"We have a flood of data now, instead
of a flood of untestable theories."
Smolin originated the theory of cosmological natural
selection, which proposes that black holes recreate
the universe, and as the universe changes, so do the
laws of physics.
Smolin's theory is that the universe is a sometimes
unpredictable process of events that can be best
explained by Charles Darwin's theory of natural
selection. The universe evolves, and as it evolves
it recreates the rules that govern its behavior.

could support life - and it's just a hop, skip and jump from
us in cosmic terms.
"They have discovered a giant gas planet like Jupiter in the
constellation Puppis, just 90 light-years away.
"What's more, the new planet has a circular orbit like Jupiter,
sits a Jupiter-like distance from its star, HD70642, and has no
bigger planets between it and the star, just like Jupiter.

James Oberg, a longtime skeptic of the extraterrestrial
interpretation of the UFO phenomenon, has more than once
suggested a rather conspiritorial countertheory.
In June 1980, Moscow had a major UFO flap. People saw a
giant light and some claimed that aliens were chasing cars
and drilling holes through house windows. Tens of thousands
of citizens allegedly saw some or all of this weirdity.
In _Omni_ magazine, Oberg proposed that the KGB was behind
it: "The KGB, eager to muddy the waters and cover up public
recognition of the military space center at Pietsk, is only
too happy to promote scintillating stories about aliens
chasing cars and boring nasty holes in windows."
More recently, Oberg has pointed an accusing finger at
agencies of the U.S. government:
... Government representatives--officials, military
officers, etc.--used "UFO" as a convenient camouflage
for other official classified activities (such as
retrieval of crashed aircraft or nuclear weapons or
other objects); or used artificial "UFO stories"
(in oral, written, photographic, film, etc. form) as
"tracers" in studying the function of security
safeguards and personnel psychological responses; or
used "UFO" as an excuse (either intended or accidental)
to cover up improper, forbidden, or diplomatically
delicate activities... or any other activity that the
government--or any part of it--wanted to keep hidden.
Oberg made these charges in an open letter to Dr.
Steven Greer of the _CSETI_ organization, who is trying
to force the government to release UFO secrets. Oberg
supports Greer in wanting the secrets given to the public,
even though Greer expects the hidden data will support the
extraterrestrial hypothesis and Oberg believes it will just
show that the government lies to us a lot of the time.
Most conspiritologists would certainly like to see the
release of any alleged "UFO secrets" dealing with lost
nuclear weapons and "improper, forbidden, or diplomatically
delicate" activities.
