Some of the most obvious externally manifested *symptoms* of
schizophrenia present as exclusively mental in nature.

Schizophrenia  has been known to produce "addled minds", even though
that term is not quite scientific, it is descriptively accurate in
certain cases.
I am acquainted with several schizophrenics who are obsessed with
UFOs, as one explanation for their internal voices, and who will both
amplify the flimsiest evidence, and fabricate evidence to support
their obsessions.
One is known locally, (possibly unkindly), as "The guy who talks to
aliens", although he seems quite proud of this label.
