I saw a recent lecture on SETI. One of the principals stated that radio
waves were perfect for "cutting through interstellar interference". It is
thought that if E.T. wants to communicate with us, he would pull out the old
"boy scout" radio equipment and set it up in an effort to make contact.
No one is denying that ET probably has much more sophisticated communication
systems, only that radio would be the most likely one used to initiate first
contact.
BTW, the closest stars are only 4 light years away, not hundreds. The earth
has been broadcasting for 50+ years. If a planet within 25 light years had
received an earth transmission, and replied, we would be receiving it's
signal any day now!

What makes you think ETs will be using radio? Especially when it would
typically take over a hundred years for such signals to reach a
destination.

Join the search for extra terrestrial life and install SETI-BOINC on
your
PC.
It uses the idle time of your pc to analyse radiosignals from space.
