Knights Templar ask Pope for official apology
The Knights Templar have written a letter to the Pope, dated 13
October 2004, in which they formally request an apology for the
persecution of the Order from 1307 A.D.. A Papal or Vatican response
is required in time for 13 October 2007, which is the 700th
anniversary of the arrest of the Templar leadership. Many of the
leaders, including the Grand Master himself, were tortured and roasted
alive for alleged heresy.
Public awareness of the Templars has never been higher than in today's
more open and secular society, thanks in part to best-selling books
such as The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown as well as many popular works
of non-fiction (see below). Interest in esoteric topics and the occult
has been boosted recently among old and young people alike by the
highly publicised Harry Potter books about a fictional young wizard.
The letter was written on the official letterhead of the Knights
Templar. It bares a Maltese-type rosy red cross and is addressed:
"Grand Preceptory, PO Box 225, Hertford, Hertfordshire SG14 1WX,
England".
