Full Entangled House
Entanglement -- the weird quantum property
in which one particle instantly knows what has
happened to a distant partner particle -- appears
to be essential for performing steps in a quantum
computation. A group from the University of Science
and Technology of China has entangled five particles,
one more than the previous record and the minimum
needed for standard error correction.
The researchers first created two entangled photon
pairs, sent one photon from each pair through a beam
splitter to entangle them, and then sent one of the
remaining photons through a beam splitter with a fifth
photon, thereby entangling all five photons.
The entanglement allowed them to re-create, or
"teleport," the quantum state of one photon among
the five to any of three others (using the fourth as an
intermediary), instead of to a predetermined one as in
previous demonstrations. Although a quantum computer
probably would not run entirely on photons, manipulating
them is key for quantum communications.

obstruct attempts to produce physically realistic models for
the unification of general relativity with quantum mechanics,
unless determinism in the latter is restored. The notion of
time in GR is so different from the usual one in elementary
particle physics that we believe that certain versions of
hidden variable theories can -- and must -- be revived.
A completely natural procedure is proposed, in which the
dissipation of information plays an essential role.
Unlike earlier attempts, it allows us to use strictly
continuous and differentiable classical field theories as a
starting point (although discrete variables, leading to
fermionic degrees of freedom, are also welcome), and we
show how an effective Hilbert space of quantum states naturally
emerges when one attempts to describe the solutions statistically.
Our theory removes some of the mysteries of the holographic
principle; apparently non-local features are to be expected when
the quantum degrees of freedom of the world are projected onto a
lower-dimensional black hole horizon. Various examples and models
illustrate the points we wish to make, notably a model showing
that massless, non interacting neutrinos are deterministic.

The holographic principle states that the number of degrees of
freedom describing the physics inside a volume (including gravity)
is bounded by the area of the boundary (also called the screen)
which encloses this volume. A stronger statement is that these
(quantum) degrees of freedom live on the boundary and describe the
physics inside the volume completely. The obvious question is,
what mechanism is behind the holographic principle. Recently,
't Hooft argued that the quantum degrees of freedom on the
boundary are not fundamental. We argue that this interpretation
opens up the possibility that the mapping between the theory in
the bulk (the holographic theory) and the theory on the screen
(the dual theory) is always given by a (generalized) procedure
of stochastic quantization. We show that gravity causes
differences to the situation in Minkowski/Euclidean spacetime
and argue that the fictitious coordinate needed in the stochastic
quantization procedure can be spatial. The diffusion coefficient
of the stochastic process is in general a function of this
coordinate. While a mapping of a bulk theory onto a (quantum)
boundary theory can be possible, such a mapping does not make
sense in spacetimes in which the area of the screen is growing
with time. This is connected to the average process in the
formalism of stochastic quantization. We show where the
stochastic quantization procedure breaks down and argue, in
agreement with ‘t Hooft, that the quantum degrees of freedom
are not fundamental degrees of freedom. They appear as a limit
of a more complex process.

The issue remains, when will we ever stop burdening the taxpayer

fad to a time-honored problem, this method holds promise precisely
because a large part--but not all--of the structure of quantum
theory has always concerned information. It is just that the
physics community needs reminding. This paper, though taking
quant-ph/0106166 as its core, corrects one mistake and offers
several observations beyond the previous version. In particular,
I identify one element of quantum mechanics that I would not
label a subjective term in the theory--it is the integer
parameter D traditionally ascribed to a quantum system via
its Hilbert-space dimension.

ISLAM: A SEX POSITIVE RELIGION
Islam could be classed as a sex-positive religion.
Though it held many positions in common with
Judaism and Christianity, and many characters in
the Bible appear in the Koran, Islamic laws relating
to marriage, divorce, fornication, and other aspects
of sexual behavior are derived more from pre-Islamic
Arabic attitudes than from the Judeo-Christian
tradition. Moreover, the Greek ascetic attitudes
about sex were at first not particualrly strong in
Islam, although they later had some effect.
The key to Islamic outlooks on sex, as on so many
other things, is the teachings of the Prophet
Muhammed, who, true to the Arabic tradition,
regarded sex as a good rather than an evil aspect
of life. This still holds true today.
H. R. P. Dickson, a recorder of Arab customs
and mores, reported in the 1930s that it was
no exageration to say that sexual intercourse
is loved by the ordinary Arab above all pleasures
in the world. It is the one great pleasure common
to rich and poor alike, and the one moment of
forgetfulness in his daily round of troubles that
Badawin or townsmen can enjoy. Men and women
equally love the act, which is said to keep men
young, "just like riding a mare."
In this attitude the Arabs were simply reflecting
the teachings of Muhammed.
