Space.com ran a story that claimed two NASA scientists had a private
meeting with space officials and informed them they had strong evidence
that there is current life on Mars. Further, the article claimed the
two scientists informed the space officials that they had given the
story to 'Nature' for publication.
Major media picked up on the story and ran it. I also commented on it
on my talk show. Within a few hours of putting my show online I
received an e-mail from a listener who had some inside information that
the story was not true.
On Friday morning (Feb. 18) I e-mailed the Space.com reporter credited
with the story and informed him of the information I had received. I
invited him to comment on the situation. Further, I invited him to
come on the show and make his comments. I also informed him I would be
doing a show on Monday (Feb. 21) about this situation.
His reply to me was to refer me to a new article on space.com. I read
it. It was, in effect, an article that stepped back from the original
article. But, there was no comment about how the first story came to
be.
I sent another e-mail asking the reporter to comment on the situation
and inviting him to be on my show. I have, at this writing, received
no reply.
Did Space.com and Brian Berger, the reporter, follow in Dan Rather's
footsteps? I will be delving into this on Monday at
http://kevinsmithshow.com.
