The stitching line looks more like a runway to me.  It is extra long
for the high flight speeds necessary in a very thin atmosphere.  It is
stitched to let the pilot see the line at high altitude.

It is carefully positioned to avoid craters.  Sure hate to run into a
crater when landing at mach 2.
