In the final weeks of World War II in Europe, the American armies captured some 7 million German POWs. How could we deal with this mass of hateful monsters? General Eisenhower and the U.S. Army came up with a new legal designation for POWs: Disarmed Enemy Forces (DEFs). Based on this definition, we declared that we would not be bound by the rules of the Geneva Convention, since these were DEFs, not POWs. Sound familiar? I guess its just the American way. We are never at a loss for excuses to justify depriving others of basic human rights.
