Why?  The world's super powers and all of the governments have known
for almost 50 years that the human race was headed for extinction and

They didn't do anything to relieve the problem, and in fact have done
everything in their power to accelerate human extinction.

So, what should a group of ETs step in and fix everything that human

Well if in the scheme of things we are no more than a colony of insects, our
destiny is to serve the queen bee. IOW to create a seed which can arise
again from the ashes. From the point of view of our leaders, if this is the
inevitable future of humankind, our destiny in the Universe, the law of
nature. Then there is no point in saving the planet, particularly if our
leaders know our future in the stars is already assured, the time for the
death of this planet will come eventually may as well run it into the ground
it's well past it's prime and ripe for the plucking :)
