another kooks history "fact"?
read this.
Well there is this slightly damning picture taken in 1937
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Nazi_Windsors.jpg
If you read further down this page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_VIII_of_the_United_Kingdom
to the bit headed "World War II" it does discuss the fact that the
couple were seen as a liability in WWII were knocking about with
close friends of Herman Goering (who was head of the Luftwaffe) at
the height of the Battle of Britain. They were subsequently
dispatched to Bermuda by order of the Government. Also documents
came to light in 1996 that there may have been plans to reinstall
him as King had the Nazis succeeded in conquering Britain.
So these ideas are not entirely without foundation.
but he did NOT live in france during the war...
True. He has never been talked about much on an official level since the War
and certain aspects have remained an embarriment, such that some details
were not relesed under the 50 year rule until after the death of the Queen
Mother.
he fled to spain, maybe he sympathised with hitler
,but a conspiricy to become king under hitler?
unlikely, then he would have stayed in france.
then it's called treason,not a conspiricy.
Not really although Spain remained neutral in WWII it was Under Franco who
was a Fascist dictator who was aided to power by the Nazis. He would have
been able to have had contact with Nazi diplomats and even members of the
Nazi leadership. Given at the time the British Empire still occupied
somewhere in the region of a third of the World's surface and I'm sure he
would have even been welcome in the US he didn't have to go live in Spain if
he was looking for somewhere warm and to be able to do a bit of Yachting.
Spain OTOH would have been the ideal place to go into exile awaiting the
Nazi victory and his reinstallation as King
Well yes I suppose you could regard it as treason under the circumstances
and there are theories (although unproven) he tipped of the Germans to the
whereabouts of British Troops and caused the whole Dunkirk fiasco. Which if
true then he certainly was a traitor. However I would tend to doubt that
theory myself.
I think the most likely scenario is he had strong Fascist sympathies and
beliefs. Fascists are usually extremely patriotic and Nazi ideas about
breeding and the Master Race would not been at variance with being a member
of the Royal Family after all we are talking Blood heritage going back
thousands of years. The other thing is he may have been quite nieve about
Nazism I think a lot of people were at that time, he may in fact have been a
pacifist at heart and genuinely thought that cooperating with Hitler to
avert all out war was the best way forward in the interests of Britain and
indeed the Empire. After all Hitler's ideas about World domination were not
totally at variance with the British spirit and ironically one of the main
reasons the British Empire got so big was exactly because of the British
ability to compromise. Of course he may also of thought allowing Hitler to
Annexe Europe (IOW do all the dirty work), and Britain could have just got
rid of him at some point and added Europe to the Empire :)
A bit nieve perhaps but who knows history could have played out differently
and there were people who entertained such ideas. Of course you can't
entirely blame people at that time for being nieve about Fascism because
unlike us they didn't have the benefit of hindsight, and also although
people were probably aware of Hitler's Racist views, it's doubtful they knew
a great deal about the horror of the concentration camps at that point in
time.
