Could you re-check that? My sources say that transcontinental
Boeing 767's might take on about 23,000 *gallons* of fuel.

The terrorists hijacked long-range flights, probably to
maximize the fuel load. The plains had already made their
initial ascents, which burns a significant part, but not
the major part, of the fuel.

Close. These were commercial jetliners, so they would not
use the military additives. We're looking at Jet A or Jet A-1.
Same density range. So John Griffin's off-the-cuff description
of "a hundred thousand pounds of jet fuel" seems reasonable.
