True, but we're not talking about now then, are we?

True. Saying that commercial aircraft follow a preset flight plan and tend
to be tracked by air traffic control. Any major deviation from that flight
plan and course would be obvious, and since hijackings were not unknown even
before 9/11 it is surprising the jets weren't scrambled, even if only as a
routine precaution, and of course it should have been obvious where the
second plane was heading. Of course it's easy to point the finger at
ineffective response and poor communication with the benefit of hindsight.
