Those guys were not sent by their homeworld, they were rebels.
They came to bring you some light (like Prometheus), part of their
"payload" contained oldest technologies from a history museum
in order to make it easier for humans to understand the basics.
{Ask "Xerox", they got most of it :-)}

P.S.: Your second question is irrelevant, there are no artificial
intelligent machines that feel a irrational need to help mankind.
