Well artists had been etching things for years using Copper and Nitric Acid,
and old fashioned chemical photography is a kind of etching process to in
some ways, since it involves recording light with silver halides and using a
development process to amplify the effect and convert light affected halide
crystals to silver, whilst washing away the unaffected particles. Some
bright spark obviously thought similar processes could be used to create
electronic circuits, quite simple really. It's a wonder the Ancient
Egyptians never thought of it ;)
