Perhaps you are not aware that only 2 or 3 years earlier Japan had been
sending over balloons to bomb the west coast of the US. Planes based on
the Aleutians intercepted many but several landed and 6 people were
killed by one. They were armed with explosives and fire bombs intended
to set fire to the forests.

In 1947 americans were particularly paranoic (has it changed?) about
the USSR. In particular the Russians were known to be working on an
Atomic bomb (tested in 1949). Anything crashing, especially a balloon
would have brought hordes of invetigators.
And it is also possible that it was Aliens.
