I am not part of the seti program, my computer is not spending any cpu
cycles on it.
Up until now I thought it would be bad for my computer... and maybe it is
bad... it puts extra strain on the computer.
However I'll add a good reason to "determine if aliens exist".
If aliens do exist, and if aliens are near us, it's better that we first
learn about their existence and maybe find them, before they learn about
our existence and find us.
I think it's a little late for that. We've been broadcasting our presence
the heavens for about 80 years now (TV, Radio etc). There must be thousands
of Stars within a 80 light-year radius and if any harbor beings with an
intelligence equal to ours or higher, they know we exist and I'm sure they
have plotted the coordinates and know exactly where we are located.
They even may, as we speak, be in the process of updating their menus to
include "Barbecued Humans on a Spit".
