Well, actually, humans have been eating old salted meat or dried meat
for thousands of years.

I've been thinking about that history a lot recently too.

i.e.
If many different species of extraterrestrials are real, did they all
have to go through the experience of living in mud huts, eating dried
goat meat, but thirsty, with a friend beside slowly dying of a bad
tooth ache, and the threat of marauding goat skin covered humanoids
running over the hill any day to chop up everyone except the raped
women.
