I believe there's something out there... why wouldn't there the
universe is so big! (sound like Fox Mulder now ;) )
But when when the sixth person ever to walk on the moon claims there
are UFO's AND alien contact... I take that seriously...
Apollo 14 Astronaut shocks Journalist: “Yes, we’ve had contact with
extraterrestrials”
The sixth person ever to walk on the moon, a veteran of the Apollo 14
mission and a respected scientist, that’s Dr Edgar Mitchell. Now he
shocks the world by claiming aliens have made contact with the
humankind and it’s been going on for quite a while.

I believe several individuals here are abusing the acronym,UFO. AUFO
stands for "Unidentified Flying Object".
In the 60's, I participated in the Air Forces' Project Blue Book, albeit
from my position at the near bottom of the forces' manpower set-up for
that project (I was a simple radar maintenance technician). It was our
task to catalog and investigate allUFOsightings, whether they
originated from civilians watching the sky, from radar operators
tracking targets that shouldn't have been where they appeared on their
screen, from pilots, or from any other source. Virtually all of the UFOs
were eventually explained....trust me, in an "non-alien" spaceship
context. A few, though, admittingly, were never explained. In any case,
once explained, they were no longer cataloged asUFO'sbut as something
more appropriate, e.g. a private plane flying without a registered
flight plan, etc.
Now, do I believe in aliens? I don't know--there might be but I'd bet
the farm there are none within our solar system. Why? That's pretty
obvious...unless I'm missing something. If an alien spaceship appeared
in our skies, that had departed from a planet, let's say 400,000 light
years away, do you know how old they would be when they arrived here? Do
the math (but you'll need more than a pocket calculator to do it)...me
thinks they would have had to have carried several Fountain of Youths
along with them on their trip....not to mention juuuust a bit of extra
food and drinks.
Strawman argument. Why does it have to be 400,000 light years away?
That's true; there are a number of star systems within 20 light years that
could contain habitable planets.
yes, but... no but.... yes but... 'habitable' by what ? 43 foot spider
like creatures ? Slugs 5 storeys high ? microscopic dogs with two heads ??
:-) Seems to me, there are plenty of wierd enough species right here, we
don't need to go 20 light years to find them. I think what you're really
looking for is some super-advanced species that can solve all our problems
and give us some new ways of storing billions of mp3s in a tiny space....
The big sticking point (for our primitive
physics) is the speed of light barrier. But such journeys could be made
with near-light drives.
yeah but...why bother ?
There are some fairly far-out theories about
faster than light travel, involving exotic particles and Star Trek-like
"warp drive." We must never assume that our current understanding of
physics is any where near complete, or even close to correct.
It is VERY close to correct so far as it goes, otherwise your tv wouldn't
work.
Take dark
matter and dark energy for instance: these have been invented to fit our
current understanding of the age, and expansion, of the universe -- I
intensely distrust such inventions. Einstein did it, and later called it
"my biggest mistake." I bet dark matter don't exist! You heard it here
first! Mind you, the great majority of astronomers and physicists disagree
with me! :-)
However as an amateur astronomer, I have only twice seen objects in the
night sky that I could not explain -- why are these damn aliens avoiding
me? <g>
You just aren't probing material, Mike ...:-)
I reckon there's enough 'unintelligent' species right here, so we must be
hankering for some kind of highly advanced civilisation ... but if we
found one, what then?
Think of those guys native in the rain forest. What good does it do them
to come in contact with us ? All they get is new diseases and an alcohol
problem.
By the same token, what good would it do us to meet the Thargs ? If they
were THAT intelligent, we'd have no idea what they were grobbling on about
anyway. I reckon the search for extra terrestrial super-intelligent life (
the only kind worth looking for) is just laziness... it stops us having to
go through all the bother sorting out the next few billiennia of
scientific advancement all by ourselves.
Let's face it, the almighty put habitable planets so ridiculously far away
from each other for a very good reason. ..
BTW is that Mike , Mike ??
Mike :-)
