Security can mean safety or measures against criminal activity.

 From the hall, an elevator could appear empty, but a criminal could be in the corner by the door.  A mirror could let a prospective passenger or a passing cop see him.

And here I thought you were alluding to the erotic uses of ceiling mirrors.... live and learn ;-)
