Security can mean safety or measures against criminal activity.
From the hall, an elevator could appear empty, but a criminal
could be in the corner by the door. A mirror could let a
prospective passenger or a passing cop see him.
um, a mirror on the ceiling, interior to the elevator?

A convex security mirror attached to the ceiling would fit his description.
Clever.
But the mirrors are flat.
