Besides the one I happened to come face to face with, up close and personal in my parking lot, here in Las Vegas, 5 years ago, there was one, in about 1970 or thereabouts, that myself and four or five other witnesses, all friends, saw at night, not more than a few hundred feet away, in a clearing in the woods from take off location to over head, hovering as it slowly departed, with a high pitched whine, something like a harrier jet, but I think before they had harrier jets. This occured in rural Virginia. I've heard harrier jets. Their noise is blusterous and noisy. This whine we hear was all together different. This was just a very high pitched whine. The ship rotated in mid course and went from moving straight over towards the mountain top to my left, to moving sideways towards and over the mountain top to my left. It was pretty neat when you think about it, but at the time, I panicked because it was just too awesome.Or because you're a coward.I was standing on a small rocky beach of a small lake, and it was some time past dusk, and my friend who was with me and I saw a light in a wooded area across the lake from us. The lake was only about 150 to 200 feet across. The light in the wooded area was another fifty or so feet back in the wooded area up from the road. There was a narrow road that went around the lake as it was a valley we were in. I shined my flash light in the direction of the light, and turned it on and off, a few times, signalling to whoever it was in the clearing with their light on. The light suddenly took off, slowly, vertically, and proceeded to come up and out of the clearing and sort of towards us, but above us within 200 feet or so from us. There were no rotor blades which there at the lake in the valley where we were would have been audible. There was only a very high pitched, continuous sound, like "eeeeeeeeee". I panicked when it got up and out of the clearing and made its approach in our general direction. My friend didn't panick. He was more thrilled by it. I wasn't going to hang around. So I turned around, and scrambled back up the small hill behind us to the road that looped around the lake. We rejoined our main group of friends, and they all had seen it. This was in Virginia, west of Washington, D.C.What you saw was a helicopter.I don't think so. There weren't any rotor blades. As I said, it gave off a high pitched sound and did a rotation in mid flight. That must have been for our benefit, as you could clearly see the front of the air ship as it had a light emitting from it, it was traveling rather slowly, too, and when it turned towards us, whoever was at the helm of it must have been laughing as the light pointed directly towards us. As I said, it went from there, practically right in front of our faces, sideways over the mountain to my left and though you may think it was a helicopter, it wasn't a helicopter, because helicopters don't land and take off from wooded clearings of negligible size. None of my friends felt it was a helicopter. The word helicopter didn't even come up. We all agreed on one thing, and that was, whatever it was, we all saw it. John Ayres
