so, we'd say... "Oh, may as well head back to Earth".

Yes. But we are supposed to do our homework. Somehow, we''ll develop
the systems to map out our universe, and then, we search through the
database of mapped out solar systems to find inhabitable planets with
no majoror humanoid like life forms living. Once we find habitable
planets, with no humanoid life forms, then we go in for further study.
Eventually, we'll find a planet worth exploiting.
