There is an old Science fiction story about a Jesuit priest coming back
through space after visiting the remnants of a super Nova that explained
perfectly the star story.
It turne out that the explosion had destroyed an advanced civilization.
Not so far-fetched. The Ordovician–Silurian extinction event 440
million years ago might have been from a supernova. Killed 60% of life
on Earth. There's a star only 150 LY away that has been making funny
pre-supernova noises.
