THE BIBLE EXPLAINED

A Guide to the Holy Bible
for Parents and Teenagers

-----<back cover text>

Where did you come from?
What is your purpose?
What happens when you die?

These questions--and more--are answered in 'The
Bible Explained', which is based on the teachings
of the Holy Bible. The Holy Bible is a collection
of ancient books which claim to be the word of the
one and only God. This one and only God claims to
be the sole creator, owner, and sustainer of all
things; he further claims to hold the one and only
key to eternal life. Are these claims true? Get
the facts and then decide for yourself.

This document is meant to be understood by everyone,
and is therefore written in plain, simple language,
avoiding complex religious jargon.

Understand the Bible like never before.

Questioning Evolution

Humans tend to question the beliefs of others, but
not their own. If someone tells you a particular
event will occur 65 million years in the future,
would you believe him? If someone tells you a
particular event occurred 65 million years in the
past, would you believe him? Do you possess the
courage to question Evolution? Are you confident
enough to apply the scientific method to Evolution?

Time and Stability: Time and stability are
essential components in Evolution, as the process
of evolution requires vast amounts of time and a
stable environment. It is an observed fact that the
sun is crucial to life on the earth, and that small
changes in the sun has tremendous effects on life
on the earth; it is also known that the sun is
constantly changing (like a campfire, the sun is
currently exhausting its limited supply of fuel,
and will eventually burn out). Question: if the
evolutionary process requires vast amounts of time,
and if the sun is constantly changing, and the sun
has significant effects on life on the earth, how
can any long-term evolution occur under such
unstable and potentially hostile conditions?

The Sun: Heat and light from the sun are critical
to life on Earth. Too much heat would turn the
earth into a lifeless desert; too little heat would
turn it into a frozen wasteland. Has the energy
output from the sun been constant over time? If
not, what was its output one million years ago, and
what effect did it have on life on earth? What
about 100 million years ago? How about a billion
years ago?

The Earth: Current observations indicate the earth
is gradually moving away from the sun -- at a rate
of about 15 centimetres per year. How close was the
earth to the sun one million years ago, and what
was the effect on the earth? What about 100 million
years ago? How about a billion years ago?

The Moon: Current observations indicate the moon is
gradually moving away from the earth -- at a rate
of about 3.8 centimetres per year. How close was
the moon to the earth one million years ago, and
what effect did it have on the earth? What about
100 million years ago? How about a billion years
ago?

Earth's Rotation: Due to friction between the earth
and moon, the earth's rotational speed is gradually
decreasing, resulting in longer days at a rate of
about 2.3 milliseconds per century. How fast was
the earth rotating one million years ago, and what
was its effect on life and the moon? What about 100
million years ago? How about one billion years ago?

Earth's Magnetic Field: There is an invisible
magnetic field which surrounds the earth and blocks
harmful cosmic radiation from reaching the earth's
surface. If this magnetic field were not present,
radiation from the sun would promptly destroy life
on the earth. Current observations indicate said
magnetic field is in a state of decline -- it's
becoming weaker over time and, hence, losing its
ability to shield the earth. Current data indicate
the field is decaying at a rate of about half per
1400 years -- in other words, the field loses half
its strength every 1400 years. How strong was the
earth's magnetic field one million years ago, and
what effect did it have on the earth? What about
100 million years ago? How about one billion years
ago?

Catastrophic Setbacks: Geological records, which
are subject to interpretation, indicate that the
earth may be regularly visited by global
catastrophes, supposedly causing major setbacks in
the evolutionary process. In the presence of
constant setbacks, how can evolution have the
opportunity to produce any type of "complex" life-
forms, such as man?

Law of Multiplication: According to the law of
multiplication, life on earth is steadily
increasing. From the year 1960 to the year 2000,
the global human population doubled from 3 billion
to 6 billion. In other words, it took 40 years for
the global population to double. Using the law of
division, how far back in time can we go before we
run out of humans? If we assume the population
doubles every 130 years, it would take a couple of
humans about 4000 years to generate 6 billion
offspring. If humans have been on the earth for
tens of thousands of years, there ought to be a lot
more of them: where are they? Even if population
growth is occasionally set back by wars, diseases,
famines, and natural disasters, there should be a
lot more than 6 billion humans as of the year 2000.
If Evolution has been ongoing for millions of
years, why is the earth not yet filled with
"higher" life-forms?

Biblical Multiplication: According to the Bible,
two humans -- Adam and Eve -- were created about
6000 years ago and they started the process of
human multiplication; however, all the humans -- except 8 -- were destroyed about 1650 years later
in a global flood (the story of Noah and the ark).
From these 8 survivors, the current human
population was generated -- a process which has
been ongoing for about the last 4350 years. If we
assume the population has doubled every 140 years,
8 humans could generate 6 billion in about 4350
years.

Written Records: Written records date back from
about 1600 B.C. to about 3000 B.C. Why do written
records not go back further? According to the
Bible, there was a global flood around 2350 B.C.,
which would have destroyed or buried prior records.

Observations and Assumptions: Did you notice
something common in the "facts" and figures given
above? They are all based on assumptions about the
unobserved past. However, science is not based on
assumptions; science is based on observation:
therefore, we must dismiss the above "facts" as
scientifically invalid. Whenever someone tells you
something about the unobserved past, throw it away
-- it's worthless: it's not science; it's
speculation. Should we also throw away the Bible?
The Bible is different in that it claims to be,
among other things, an eyewitness account of
creation and history. Therefore, test the things in
the Bible to determine if they be true or false; if
false, then throw it away: "Test all things; hold fast
what is good." [1 Thessalonians 5:21]

Why Two Unique, Complementary Genders: Of all the
possibilities, why did Evolution produce exactly
two unique, complementary genders? Why not three or
more? Why not one? Is one not more efficient than
two? If Evolution is based on 'survival of the
fittest', why did males, being stronger, not
eliminate females in the aeons of evolutionary
history? Because males preserved females in order
to satisfy their sexual desires? If a man's
instinct is to survive, why would he waste his time
and energy in the raising up of offspring, knowing
they might become his rivals? In other words, why
did he not eliminate them at birth? 'Survival of
the fittest' is based on self-centredness and self-
preservation, which leads to extinction due to
neglect of offspring.

God's Two Genders: From an evolutionary point of
view, I cannot explain why there should be exactly
two, complementary genders; however, God knows why
he created two genders. Consider the following
passages: "So God created man in His own image; in
the image of God He created him; male and female He
created them." [Genesis 1:27] And, "Therefore a man
shall leave his father and mother and be joined to
his wife, and they shall become one flesh."
[Genesis 2:24] God made man and woman to live in
extremely close quarters; and God knew that such
closeness would inevitably produce friction and
conflict between the two. Thus, God provided a
mechanism by which to avoid conflict: he made one
stronger than the other. Here's how it works: A
husband, knowing that he is stronger than his wife,
is reluctant to engage her in physical battle -- knowing that such a campaign would be unfair; a
wife, knowing that she is weaker than her husband,
is reluctant to arouse his anger -- knowing that
she would be at a disadvantage should any physical
competition ensue: thus, the peace is kept.
However, if a husband misuses his strength against
his wife, he is a fool, for he attacks his own
house; and if a wife provokes her husband to anger,
she is also a fool, for a house divided against
itself cannot stand.

Simple and Complex: The Cell and the Computer: A
single living cell is vastly more complex than a
fully functioning personal computer. Would you
expect time and chance to produce a fully
functioning personal computer? If not, how can time
and chance produce a single living cell, which is
considerably more complex than a computer? In order
for a computer to do something intelligent, it must
first be programmed by an intelligent programmer -- and the same can be said of a living cell. Both
computers and cells execute pre-programmed code.
Computers execute binary code; cells execute
genetic code. Computers frequently fail; cells have
continued to perform their functions for thousands
of years. If we say that time and chance can
produce a living cell, then we must concede that
time and chance can also produce a fully
functioning computer, yet we know that the
production of a computer requires much effort on
the part of intelligent beings. If it were possible
for time and chance to produce an intelligent
device, it is far more probable that a personal
computer would be produced before a single living
cell, since the computer is much simpler than the
cell. In my opinion, both the computer and the cell
must be products of intelligence rather than time
and chance, but one requires greater intelligence
than the other.
